Stories on the long-term dangers of sitting keep popping up in the news, like this one:
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/3495…And discussions on how to address the issue are appearing with greater frequency, such as this one:
http://lifehacker.com/#!5735528/…My question is, have any of you switched to a standing desk and, if so, do you have any advice (particularly anything specific to the task of a graphic designer)?
Are there other means you've adopted to combat sitting all day?

"Are there other means you've adopted to combat sitting all day?"

i actually use one of these in my office. it helps my back tremendously by alleviating pressure from the spine. i rigged a small desk upside down that holds my monitor, keyboard and mouse inverted so i can work. yeah it makes client meetings awkward because their eye level is staring me right in the crotch, but when i'm 80 and still able to round-house kick people in the face because of my awesome back who will be laughing then? WHO? me that's who.

So I smoke, I sit and I stare at a screen; the end is soon.
Good thing I got rid of my indiglo watch.

At home, I switched from working at a desk to working a bar. This way I can stand when I work, plus I'm closer to the beer. But I don't have to put in 9+ hours at home and I have the option of pulling up a bar stool if I want.
I really am considering the standing desk for work, but would like to hear if any other designers have given it a shot. I suppose I could have a tall chair on hand as an option.

during college i had a job operating a kiosk, standing all day is pretty intense. good shoes / supports help, but it's still a lot of strain- and i was in pretty good shape, biking 20+ miles a day and surfing 3+ days a week.

lower and tilt the back of your chair as far as possible, so you can sit in a lying position , so that only the head and your arms are visible
how I do it at work

Both standing/sitting for long periods of time have benefits/disadvantages. What's more important is that in either situation you practice proper ergonomics that fit your body type. There isn't one chair or one desk or one pair of shoes that perfectly match and compliment a persons body. The key is to find what works for you and minimizes your exposure to the negative long-term effects of either situation.

I set up my home computer as a standing kiosk in the hall. I don't "work" much from home anymore so it made sense to get it out of the way. I can easily be there for an hour without noticing any uncomfort from standing, but for any longer I have to grab a stool, much like melq does. I can't imagine doing this at work at all. Never heard of it even.

Just get something like this: http://www.geekdesk.com/
Im sure you could make something similar on your own if it doesnt look 'designy' enough for ya :)

Wow... a very convincing quote from the MSNBC article:
"We don't have enough evidence yet to say how much sitting is bad," said Peter Katzmarzyk of the Pennington Biomedical Research Center in Baton Rouge...
- monNom0
it appears the only real solution is to move your monitor and keyboard to the floor, and lounge in front of the computer, propped up on you elbow... like they do in the offices of webcam workers.

The people that warn you about this are the same kind of sensationalists that claim you can get mercury poisoning from eating tuna.
yes, if you sit long enough your muscles can even atrophy. people have been sitting for extended periods of time for years and standing up isn't going to benefit you that much more.
"After four hours of sitting, the body starts to send harmful signals"
seriously? ...seriously?
