Both standing/sitting for long periods of time have benefits/disadvantages. What's more important is that in either situation you practice proper ergonomics that fit your body type. There isn't one chair or one desk or one pair of shoes that perfectly match and compliment a persons body. The key is to find what works for you and minimizes your exposure to the negative long-term effects of either situation.
