anyone had any negative experiences (buying direct from Apple UK)

Bought two, both fine. Typing this on a refurbed G4 PowerBook. Still going strong six years later.

had mine for 2plus years now and its still working pretty darn good considering the abuse I have given it...fell 6 feet to a wood floor and nothing broke, amazing! I did have an issue where during a software update it went on the fritz, apple said harddrive is toast and needed to replace, I went home and rebooted my system software, lost all of my files but the drive was fine and still working.

Of about 7-10 items bought by myself or friends, one MB Pro had very slight signs of use, one MB Pro had weaker battery than it should've had, one charger blew the first day (could've happened to any charger, it looked 100% new and got replaced in AppleCare quickly).
Based on those experiences, I will buy refurb stock from Apple again, the small risk is worth the price difference.

Have purchased two Macs refurb in the last 8 years. Both still working. Average discount was about 23%.

I'm on my 2nd refurbed 17 MPB...never had anything major happen. I saved about $600-$700 on each purchase. But, definitely get the Apple Care for the added protection.

wish i would've gotten a refurb on this one, heavy discount last time i looked on the 27" imac

I've never owned a Mac, but of all my friends that have bought refurbs, none have had problems, and I know about 5 or 6 people that have had problems with new ones.
A refurb ensures that it has been checked working. Refurbs are typically taken care of more as they can;t fall back on selective checking as an excuse.
They also come with the same warranty, right?
- same warranty. and you're right they get checked as operable. new ones i don't imagine get tested.brandelec

If you buy a Refurbished Mac and it did go on the blink can you take it into your local Apple Store to get it looked at?

Yep refurbs generally come in plain boxes, presumably to make it harder for you to resell as a new unwanted gift or whatever. Refurbs are always good. The only thing to really look out for is the lifecycle of the bundled software. You don't want to buy a mac only for them to turn around and release a new OS the following week, or the iLife suite.
- anything "update" related will always be an issue, specially with macs, no matter what you buyMiguex
- there's always something new right about to come out. ALWAYS whatever you buy, will only be new for 3 weeksMiguex
- The OS is the biggie. And usually the release date is common knowledge.Centigrade

if u buy refurbed you look uncool.
- fuck : /mikotondria3
- if you buy new you are paying more, for something that might be defectiveMiguex
- that why i pay more for the same shit. hahah.akrok

savings can be hit/miss depending on age of the product you want. takes a few months for newer to start showing up in refurb listings.
2010 macbook airs are just starting to appear, and only savings of $180. hardly worth it.
current MBP's are saving $500+, good deal, but new 2011 product is due any day now.
- that said i saved $500 on an imac a few months after release, great deal and still going stronghorton

Maxed out Airs 13" (2.16GHz/4GB/256GB) are $1500 when available (or €1500 around here) as opposed to 1800 regular price.
Apple operates as if it was fashion industry (well, it is): regular seasonal shows with press and celebrities, high price on launch, discounts not starting until two-three months in.
I don't think a computer that is 3-4 months after its initial line launch is out of fashion already, do you? :)

Still got my 2005 MacBook running...
Anyway, maybe it ia better to wait a bit:

looking to buy a refurb macbook pro 2.53 ghz with antiglare...
how long does it take for newer models to hit the refurb store?
I will wait to see what they release in the next few weeks. and hope the current 2.53ghz refurb goes down in price? or wait till the newer models hit the refurb store?
hmmm
- you'll be longtime before the new 2011 MBPs show up on refurb store... see my comment above.horton
- yeah just saw it... haha. sorry. will the refurb prices go down at all with a newer model release?genfour
- lowest i've noticed refurbs is 25-30%... i5s/i7s might go there when new MBPs arrive.horton
- guess I'll have to wait and see!genfour

The rumours about hew MB Pros are quite interesting: lighter alloy, removable drives, 11-12 hours battery, much cheaper ssd...
