That's true, but remember it wasn't too long ago that Apple was bankrupt (and Gates saved them, ironically).
I would think they'll keep the name and separate identity. MS is boring, no sex appeal, and that is something they desperately need. Nokia has at least a little, more than most you could argue.
Also, a merger would require share holder approval, which would, most likely, cost them their most of their (MS) cash. I doubt many MS share holders would let that happen.
Who knows, though. Execution is the big question (in my mind). I agree it is a long shot for great success, but let's be honest here, neither company really has a choice.
Neither company has a great record, although WP7 is at least an interesting point of departure. We'll have to see what WallSt says tomorrow ;-). In the short term, that's where the decisions will be.

I like how they promise things that anyone would logically already be attempting to do
"Target the top young software talent from around the world. Only if Nokia is able to attract and keep the best talent in the industry it will be able to generate the level of innovation that is needed to achieve sustained growth and consistently high profit margins."

Not sure about this Nokia and Microsoft Alliance. Nokia should have went with either Nintendo or Sony Ericsson for their alliance. It seems like MS just payed Nokia to kill off its R&D for Symbian and Meego.

Personally, I hope it is a success. MS needs to offer deals for a while to attract customers.
I am still hoping HTC One has WP7 sometime soon. Nothing else out there interests me, at all (my 4S is fine, the 5 looks old to me, nothing different, 5S won't be an inch better)
Looking forward to Surface 2, also. Loving the idea of having a tablet that is actually useful for more than presentations.

maybe they should focus on fixing clunky ass windows 8 mobile before going shopping

Windows Phone 8 is bloody good...much nicer feel than iOS and Android. Just suffering from a lack of Apps.
I hope this works.

"Microsoft to lay off 18,000 workers
A majority of the layoffs will be from the Nokia Devices and Services division, with about 12,500 jobs being cut. This is the largest round of layoffs in the company's history."
