Who uses After Effects in your field?
What are the usages as far as Interactive Media?Do you import into Flash? Do you import into something other? Any examples from the designers here?
I will be taking a Motion graphics course of the very first time, and I'm really excited about it.

I would take the route of converting any AE exports to FLV (I always use the Adobe Flash Video Encoder). And you can export to FLV with an alpha channel, which is always nice.
From there, it's just a matter of importing (or preloading) the FLV files into Flash and controlling their playback, positioning and everything else via actionscript.

i learned AE this summer. I hate that it is used mostly to create adverts. I think a better question for this forum would be:
What do you do with your AE??

Should be fun, I think you'll enjoy it.
Where are you taking your class at?

Google will teach you more than any course can.

AE's uses are as varied as Photoshop's. When you see pixel based animation, there's a very good chance it's AE.
It's a great program and don't let anyone tell you to use Final Cut or Premiere unless you have to capture from a camcorder. Those linear editors are very limited in comparison and with AE's keyboard shortcuts for everything, common tasks are much easier than most people think.
Learning will be very easy if you already know Photoshop since the basis of layers, modes, masks and effects are already familiar.
Refer to Creative Cow, Adobe Forums, Lynda.com and here for a quick answer.
Good luck.

interesting, when I tried to use FCP I get so frustrated because I don't know how to do what I can do in AE (simple things like specifying a custom canvas size for example). So I usually edit in AE when and if I do edit video, but the fact that you always have to render before previewing makes me not want to edit video at all

1. I do.
2. Intro builds, video transitions, content creation.
3. Episode Pro first, then into flash.
4. Cool. Good luck, hope you enjoy it.

@cybrain
totally agree, AE is sooo easy to use compared to premiere. Obviously they have different uses, but i stick with AE!

I use AE tons, but it's for corporate lower third titles, simple intros, bumpers, etc. The text controls are really what does it for me. I love it because like Miguex said above, it eliminates the frustration of FCP, and has a shitload of potential. I feel like I really only scratch the surface with how I use it. If I can help with anything, I will but seems like other guys on here have a broader knowledge than I...

Pitching tomorrow for a digital creative direction piece and we did some mock ups in AE to show how the concept would work as a TV spot or similar.
It's so good to do photoshop mockups and bring then to life. Hopefully it'll blow the client away!

everyday. trailers, tv spots. every once in a while i'll help out interactive with transitions for sites. usually just deliver to them as a quicktime - animation w/ alpha. they do whatever it is they do from there.
i guess if you're used to editing in an NLE then trying to do it in AE is a no go. it's just so much faster in FCP or Premiere. whatever works for you.

how do you guys plan your AE projects? Do you do a shot break down like you would for a photoshoot or commercial?
- Hombre_Lobo_20
^storyboards / animatics are usually the most helpful to me.
Then you can gauge what assets / content you need and create a plan accordingly.

i work at a motion graphics studio.basically the most important part before you create any animation is to have the storyboard and styleframes and animatics locked so you know what's happening, how it looks and how long is each sequence.
Then it's basically like photoshop but where you can animate everything.I mostly design styleframes, which are then animated in 3D and those sequences imported into flame / nuke or after effects for compositing and 2D animation.
btw, "Frame by frame" animators seem to use flash to do so, those sequences are then imported in AE.
