AE's uses are as varied as Photoshop's. When you see pixel based animation, there's a very good chance it's AE.
It's a great program and don't let anyone tell you to use Final Cut or Premiere unless you have to capture from a camcorder. Those linear editors are very limited in comparison and with AE's keyboard shortcuts for everything, common tasks are much easier than most people think.
Learning will be very easy if you already know Photoshop since the basis of layers, modes, masks and effects are already familiar.
