Is it standard business practice to pay 30 to 90 days after I deliver my work?
- capn_ron0
sadly it is.

Large corporations/businesses tend to follow that timeline, but 30 days is standard unless your contract stipulates otherwise.

You can't really start getting antsy until it goes past 30 days. Most clients pay in (roughly) 30 days, but 45 isn't uncommon.
I start calling when it goes past 45 days.

unless it's a regular client I always request a project-start deposit of 30-50%... makes the 30-90 day wait easier to swallow.

damn, a friend just told me he's been waiting for a year for some payments and 30 to 90 days is not that bad. ouch.
well, got to learn to plan for it I guess, thank you all.
- Your friend obviously doesn't want his money enough.iheartfun

at the beginning of this year we started asking for payment in full prior to delivery- only one person has objected, and they went on to screw over someone else for 10 grand.

a year? holy shit... was it in the contract?

For projects with a value of under £2000 I now ask for payment on sign off, prior to delivery of artwork/website etc. I was spending far to much time chasing up invoices for a couple of hundred pounds.
For projects over £2000 I set up payment plans for each stage of the project - eg: 50% on sign of off templates, 50% on/prior to launch of site.
I got ripped off massively earlier this year and it won't be happening to me again.

he has several clients like that, one says he has no money, another is stuck on bureaucracy (government job), another won't even let him invoice it until they have the money (city hall). basically he supports himself teaching and when the money arrives it's for debt payment.

30 days is the norm but its tough out there these days and risky so I ask for 50% deposit and 50% on completion - rarely get the final on completion but at least its clear from the start that I don't want to wait 30-90 days. And I have the right to pull the plug as its in the agreement.

Why is this industry like this? Meet all my deadlines and more often than not I get final payment whenever is convenient for the client -- regardless of payment schedule.

Net 30 used to standard when times where good here in LA. Sadly as agencies suffer or agency billing is low they transition to Net 45. If you're told their payment cycle is Net 90 I'd be worried about doing business with them because that's bankruptcy territory. A healthy agency should have a healthy billing cycle with their clients. A lot of the larger studios went to Net 90 and the agencies that didn't have healthy billing passed that Net 90 directly on to their freelancers. Sort of a "hey you'll get paid when we get paid deal" but as a freelancer you shouldn't be forced to subsidize an agency's image with a client. They look good while you're still waiting for income. Then again as a freelancer it's best to have a robust client base to help with these payment gaps.

Depends on industry.... some take a while, and if company was recently bought, beware random record keeping...

You don't have to provide trade credit if it's going to hurt you. You've got to look out for number 1. If 90days does not work fo you (and who, other than a large company with lots of cashflow would it work for?) then be explicit about payment terms in your contract.

If no deposit is made, I've always ask for payment upon delivery.

Used to be 30 days maximum. Businesses worked out they could push the little man around though, and now more often than not its 90 days before they even forget to include your invoice in the thrice yearly 'payment run'.

Buy a macbook air, leave it on standby. The moment it runs out of power, start chasing.

... a year! I would move into their house and eat their food, maybe sleep with their wife. Once i had agency owe me only a couple of grand, i simply told them this the last time i ask...
Went and sat in their reception, in my shittest clothes... Got my money in an hour.
