What do you use for storage & backup. For instance; Do you store files and work off an external HD. Do you you have a true backup (copy) of all your stuff. Do you use any of those online backup apps? What works for you?

Got 5 1tb externals, mostly used for storing crap. 2 of them are for backups of important stuff, with 1 being kept away from my house (brought home once a month to sync/backup). That 1 has all the stuff I couldn't live without (family photos, videos, music collection etc).
I use puresync and am on windows 7.

Just make sure you don't buy WD MyBook Studio, they are encrypted by default and their drives can only be read in their original enclosures.
In case of enclosure failure, you're looking into $1000 in recovery costs because your drive is encrypted and not readable in any other enclosure.

huh? MyBook Studio is exactly what I have. What do you mean by "enclosure"? I'm not taking it out of it's original plastic case. Am I safe??

- Work locally
- Automatic Backup: Time Machine to external WD MyBook Network Drive
- Manual Backup: WD MyBook Firewire Drive
- Manual Backup: WD MyBook Network Drive
- Manual Backup: On DVD (once a year I do these)
- Manual Backup: On my server (Just in case a fire happens)You can never have too many backups.

If your MyBook Studio case (a.k.a enclosure) fails (mine had power failure, wouldn't start up) you have a perfectly healthy drive inside, which you can take out quite easily and put in another third party case or inside your computer.
Here's the surprise: you will read nothing from it. All data on it is scrambled with a chip in the case and it only can be read via its original case.
WD gives you no warning about this to the point that a people who know their hardware on WD forums were surprised to discover it's:
— always encrypted (even if you don't enable encryption);
— encrypted with a hardware key unique to each box (even the WD rep on their forums didn't know this).- meh. they're dirt cheap. what do you expect. buy 2 and mirror, cost less than recovery service.inkpink

i did work of an external HD with firewire 800, when i was on my mbp.
well, i didn't at first as i didn't know it was better. :-) did some final cut stuff.now, i only recommend a enclosure with a fan. i can admit i have bought ex HD from famous/big brand also. due to the my budget.

I do all of my work on a 1TB external HD, which I then sync to a couple of backup external HDs. I work on Windows 7/ XP and I just started using a program called GoodSync. Like the name suggests, it's good, but not great. Still looking for the perfect backup/sync app.
I try to do my syncs once a week, but that doesn't always happen.
The REALLY important client stuff that I'll be screwed if I lose, I backup on my web server or via gmail. I do primarily web work, so these are generally small files.
For personal photos I post everything on my flickr page and upload at original resolution, which in my mind is kind of like a backup.
I'd like to store my HDs at different locations in case of fire, theft, etc... but I don't have a good 2nd place right now so I'm kind of screwed if these things happen.
I've thought a lot about backing up over the years, and I've pretty much concluded that there is no single perfect solution.

I'm a bit curious and interested in the mobileMe aspects of backing & storage. Especially when you can take them with you when your out and about on a phone or another computer.
- Redundancy is good if one device lost, but Time Machine good as well for versioning.ribit

I use an external backup for the entire drive weekly using SuperDuper, and my most important files (Sites, Jobs, Pictures, Documents, Music) are backed up remotely using Backblaze. Takes for fucking ever initially, but checks continuously afterwards.

i've been using backblaze online backup & storage for a few months now. works seamlessly. i don't really worry much about backing up anymore with that in place.

How is the recovery from Backblaze? do you have access to download single files or just zipped chunks of content? I'm interested in knowing more...

I have a bunch of external drives. I 'archive' them periodically (replace with a newer one), so I have a closet full of old drives (just in case! I can't throw data away!).
External - backup daily
DVD - once a week, store offsite
Mozy - online backup, although I've never gotten it to full backup my files (might be my old computer, though)

Rule number 1: Always have copies of your important files.
Rule number 2: Always have two copies IN and one copy OUTCopy IN = Original files + Copy on external HD or on another HD
Copy OUT = Copies on an external HD that you keep away physically from the original one. On a server is a good way too. Why? To prevent the lost of the originals and his copy if your house explode and/or burn down. You need a safe copy elsewhere, far from the original.
