  Rule number 1: Always have copies of your important files.
  Rule number 2: Always have two copies IN and one copy OUT

  Copy IN = Original files + Copy on external HD or on another HD
  Copy OUT = Copies on an external HD that you keep away physically from the original one. On a server is a good way too.

  Why? To prevent the lost of the originals and his copy if your house explode and/or burn down. You need a safe copy elsewhere, far from the original.
