    If your MyBook Studio case (a.k.a enclosure) fails (mine had power failure, wouldn't start up) you have a perfectly healthy drive inside, which you can take out quite easily and put in another third party case or inside your computer.

    Here's the surprise: you will read nothing from it. All data on it is scrambled with a chip in the case and it only can be read via its original case.

    WD gives you no warning about this to the point that a people who know their hardware on WD forums were surprised to discover it's:
    — always encrypted (even if you don't enable encryption);
    — encrypted with a hardware key unique to each box (even the WD rep on their forums didn't know this).
