Nice Jay!! Looks legit... but juuust in case, anyone here interested in buying a 80-200 Nikon lens? Let me know...
- nice lens. doesn't have vr, but my mentor still has his (and he has the 70-200 vri, and vr ii)jaylarson
- actually, I have to double check to make sure which one is the one I got. It was passed on to me by an uncle who bought a hole lot of equip. and almost never used it
OSFA - whole lotta equipment but almost never used it. he moved and left me his lens ;)OSFA
- nice. There's only one 80-200. Wish I could afford it, but I'm also looking to get a good tripod kit and the 16-35 f/4.jaylarson

Sigma 30mm 1.4 is what you want. It does 75% of the work on my D300. The rest is the 70-200 2.8.

The 35mm is great. The crop is a combo of your sensor and the 50mm though. So it's more like 77mm. The 50 on the D700 looks pretty normal, and the 35 is super wide.

looks like it works on a 20d:

even though it's on kenrockwell's site, this looks useful:

Question, would an 80-200 2.8 Nikon lens fit on Canon? I was told there are a few adapters that let you do it, but have you guys tried this? Any suggestions? I want to make sure it works well and it is worth it... if not, I'll just sell the lens and get a canon.

I once had a Contax RTS and a Zeiss 50 1.4 and a Zeiss 28 2.8
They both had amazingly smooth focussing rings, like old AI nikkors, but I think their focussing rings turned opposite direction from the nikon lenses, which drove me crazy... I was used to intuitive follow focus... it's an ooooold manual focus lens trick....
The 28/2.8 zeiss distagon was otherworldly sharp and contrasty, well, actually more contrasty than any other lens I had, edge contrast jumped off the page, but a closeup of a person did highlight zits and wrinkles too.... sometimes images looked a bit etched.... at F5.6 images looked like they were sharpenend in photoshop if taken in bright late afternoon light....
The zeiss 50 was a bit dreamy sometimes, but if there was an out of focus hard line in the distant background, the bokeh was oddly jarring, but round things in the background were nice...
I've heard the new zeiss lenses use similar, but slightly updated optical designs...
Even more off-topic, but I've heard cinematographers like these zeiss lenses for 5D mark II use, partly because the manual focussing is so smooth and the lenses turn so far from infinity to close focus that they can tape mark the beginning and end of a focus pull much more easily than most other lenses.... I think there's a Contax to EOS adapter out there so you don't have to get the very pricey new ones... wow did I go OT.....
- I have an older Zeiss Contax but there are no adapter rings for my D200. LOVE Zeiss!ItTango

Speaking of Nikon lenses, Zeiss is finally on tap. They're manual focus, but I'm putting my pennies aside for this:

28mm 2.8 nikkor is a cheaper option if you can't afford the 24mm. i bought mine for $150 on ebay and it hasn't left my camera since i got it. great carry-around lens.
- yeah but it's the f-stop i'm after. I've got a normal lens alreadyProjectile

I love my 24mm on a crop frame Nikon.... like 35mm on fullframe.
Note that AF-D prime lenses need Nikon bodies with motors in them for the AF to work.. D90/D300/D50/D70/D700/D3/D2x have motors, D5000, D40,etc do not.... the 35mm F2 and 24mm F2.8 are AF-D.

One note about lenses: you get what you pay for. If you go cheap now you will pay more in the long run when you replace it later. Good, quality lenses never get old.
- this i disagree with heartily, from experience. cheap lenses save you money and last just finebigtrick
- btw, super nice photos in your portfolio, mnmlst!bigtrick
- I'm not saying they don't last (though the weatherproofing suffers), but the glass is not as good. Go rent a Nikon 24-70 2.8 and compare it to anything sigma, even primes.mnmlst

A 35 will not be such a huge difference. You don't have a ton of options when using a cropped sensor. I would recommend renting each of those until you find exactly what you want (lensrentals.com is very cheap).
Anything wide and fast is going to get very pricey, but I do recommend sticking with Nikon glass when possible. The third party stuff is very hit or miss.

I have the Nikon AF-S DX 35mm f1.8G on a D40. It hasn't been off the camera since the day it arrived.
- scenek0
on the D80's cropped sensor 35mm is really 52.5. it depends where/what you shoot. i'm in the city a lot, so even my 28mm lens on a D80 often isn't as wide as i want.

24mm 1.8

or
35mm 1.8
http://www.amazon.com/Nikon-35mm…
would be fine. On a cropped sensor, I'd suggest the 24mm if you want a wide angle type prime. The 50mm on a crop is a bit aggressive. Pretty much at 70-80mm practical. I'm on a full sensor Nikon body, so it's not all that bad of a zoom.

This kicks the 50mm's ass! (you may need a canon) :-)
http://www.warehouseexpress.com/…- Is this an answer or a fanboy plug? He already said 50mm is not wide enough.mnmlst

I've had the 50mm 1.8 for years, it has always been the lens I used the most.
A few weeks ago I picked up the new 35mm 1.8, and I've barely used my 50mm since.
So far, I've found the 35mm to be as sharp as the 50mm, and the extra width is great. If I'm headed out for the day and I only want to bring one lens, I'll choose my 35mm over the 50mm every time.
Also worth noting: In my experience, all lenses that have been produced wider than 35mm are going to be softer. Of course, photographers who need to go wider are usually content with some loss of sharpness. As long as you don't expect the 24mm, 28mm or 20mm lenses to be as sharp as the 50mm or the 35mm.
