I'm looking at getting a good colour friendly monitor, this dell one is getting good reviews.

Anyone have any thoughts on a good 27"+ monitor to pair with my MBP?

- I got a 30" Dell and love it. Although I have lots of stuff open at once and move between things.jfletcher

the U2711 is an H-IPS panel, so the color and viewing angle are decent. Just look for an IPS panel type and you'll get good color gamut and accuracy. dig around for the more in-depth reviews to see what's really on the inside, a lot of monitors use the same panels but prices will vary. much like hard drives, there are lots of companies making monitors, but only a handful of manufacturers make the actual panels inside.

I've got MBP and DELL 2005FPW UltraSharp; Try to get any DELL ISP panel.

I was having a look at the New Imac and the gloss displays on them are just plain terrible, I had more view of the shop in the monitor then what was on the screen. Poor design.

I like the gloss displays - saves me having to add web 2.0 glass effects to all my designs

I just bought this monitor maybe a month ago. Apparently it has the same display element as the 27" iMacs, the differences being there is no glossy finish, and the U2711 uses CCFL backlight as opposed to the iMac's LEDs. Although more energy efficient, the LEDs have apparently caused the yellowish tint people have complained about in the iMacs, so... win for the CCFL.
I've absolutely love this monitor. Out of the box, it's far too bright and saturated, but with a little configuring you get good results quickly. I haven't had a chance to properly calibrate it yet, but from everything I've read, once calibrated, it really holds up to even more expensive pro monitors. I also really like the 2560x1440 res in the 27" format. Check ebay, I got it new in-box with no tax or shipping for >$900 US.
Also, if you're looking in that price range, and wouldn't mind a 30", I also hear good things about HP's LP3065. It doesn't have nearly the amount of input options the dell has, but it is supposed to have even better color reproduction. Hope this helps.

Are they oversaturated beyond possible calibration like earlier wide-gamut ones were? I once returned a Dell 2048WFP because of that.
Apple Cinema Displays 30" sometimes pop-up in the US refurb store for $1300 (not sure about Canada).
- I have an external HP at work and it's so fucking oversaturated I can't even correct on it. Calibration is useless even.monospaced
- useless. What a piece of shit.monospaced
- those 30's are just scary big.jayoh
- Only in the first week. You just go "whoaaa" when you sit in front of it. After that, it's just normal.raf

Is this monitor for print or mostly electronic work?
My offset printer, who's known for excellent color work, has been buying Dells for their retouchers. The head of the prepress dept. said with proper calibration they're great monitors. I think they're using Spyders to calibrate them.
- hardware (calibration) is key, for suremonospaced
- I use a spyder on my LaCie and NEC monitors. It was worth the $200 I paid for it on Ebay.Josev

I bought a 23" NEC Monitor (EA231WMi) that's been great. I think there's a 27" available from the series.
