Just prepare yourself mentally for the possibility of this being a fairly long period. Under optimal conditions, most people find a great job again three to six months after leaving the previous one.
This being a recession, though, prepare yourself for the possibility of it being longer. I'm close to my eleventh month.

maybe use this time as well to pickup a new skill or better what you have already?
noticed a lot of job posts a few months back for the normal web designer positions but they also included that you knew html/css + flash + "some video experience would be great" and all the rest...
seems like people want a lot more for their money and for less than 30k
- After Effects has been popping up more and more as a nice-to-haveContinuity

Speaking of SEO jobs...
I once got stuck overnight at an airport, waiting for an early morning flight. I spoke there to this guy who said he was a freelance SEO expert. He had spent over a year in Brazil, was waiting to fly to the Canaries for two or three months to work remotely. He said the language of his country was so easy to do SEO for that he wouldn't tell his friends what exactly he did for a living. He was afraid they would want to get into that field as well. All he would tell them was that he was an "internet professional".

Go to a few agencies, but also go to businesses that might need a new web site. Srsly, you could go right down the High Street, sticking your head in at each door, introduce yourself, and ask if they need any site work done. Or, just go down the list in the phone book (if they still have those over there...).
Work directly for them, and pretty soon you have your own "trooperbill" agency. Obviously, the trick to running an agency is not actually in doing the work--it's in finding the work. Once you can find the work, and have a relatively reliable stream of it, you are your own agency.
