Hello :)
Background:
Riding the coattails of the 'green' and 'organic' movements Happy Food looks to educate and promote awareness about healthier eating and practical alternatives to processed foods for working class families. Not aimed at the typical yupster/hipster/vegan crowd but at working-class families who think 'McDonalds' is one of the four major food groups.Identity will primarily be used on basic stationery, web and (possibly) a publication.
Crit Away :)
btw - #2 is a client request. Torn between 1 and 4 right now.

#4 is gold

4 works for me :)

#4 is great indeed, but i'm confident i've seen something nearly identical before. will try and dig it up...

4 all the way .....

dbloc / gabe,
I thought the same thing but I couldn't really find anything inside of the food industry (organic, mass-produced, or otherwise) that was similar. I did think of the amazon logo too. But... it was such a no-brainer I couldn't *not* do it. O_O

#2- Totally... Those other logos are just way to cornballish and goofy. Save that shizz for MTV.

Concept for #3 and 4 is great, but I think the type could be even better. It could look happier with subtle rounded corners, a little less condensed and a little bolder.
at the moment it looks like you are trying to squeeze all the happy out... :(
This is an awesome job to win – if the clients don't kill it!

I like the concept of #1, but I'm not sure the execution is working.
#4 is good, but I had the same reaction, in thinking of amazon. But I'm not sure that's a bad thing. You've made it it's own thing, and it works in the market for which it's intended.
All that said, it might be good to see another approach. Have you considered something iconic or even character-based? Just tossing it out there.

4 - but does it have to condensed type? i'm not a fan. :(
1 - if you get a better font.

None of them look very appetizing, though #2 at least looks like a mark of quality... if you wanted to use it that way.
#4 is probably a workable idea, but the execution needs work to make it more positive, healthy and appetizing. Looks a bit cold right now.
Keep at it, I think you need some more ideas before you start refining significantly.

#2
then #4..
#2 Has a lot more character than #4 imho. Plus it reminds me of the seal you put on the food packages. I'd work on the vertical (forgive me for the lack of type knowledge) height of the text and/or spacing.

#4 for sure. looks great. i would make the smile a different colour to make a point of focus.

I'd maybe avoid resizing the 'OO'.
You can't own a smiling logo but you can make it look happier.

Considering your target audience I would go for option 4.
I really like the aesthetics of no.1 but not for this brief.
As mentioned above try some different type styles and look at how the smile is executed.

Damn really like #1 but like chimp said.. it reminds me of waffles slathered in syrup.. so parhaps a no.
I do think you need to do more work on the 00 however. I dunno it just needs to be different somehow. nearly there though.

Unlike #1, the form and font choice in #4 is neither very friendly nor foody, but it's clearly the direction best taken from the four available. Somewhere between the two would be my preference.
#2 makes me smile - if only because it is so very American and so very 90s - I've often wondered how such things come into being. Clearly there is a distinct aesthetic trapped inside every American designer, trying desperately to get out, all the while ruthlessly oppressed by its owner.
