1625 lines of code just to do that? im sure flash are quaking in their boots..
i dont see anybody committing themselves to doing something like that in an actual project where 1625 lines is going to eat up a lot of development time. that can be done in flash in literally 10 mins..
this is the thing i have about whole HTML5 vs Flash thing. people seem to be more impressed by the fact that you can actually DO this kind of thing in html, than what it actually DOES.
- toe_knee0
could do that in flash in half the time
- ckentish0
completely pointless exercise - why draw the whale when a PNG would be fine... code for codes sake.
- jamble0
You could also do it as a graphic in less time.

the experiment is interresting, but 1625 lines of codes to do that.
I'll like to see them animate the birds and whale individually.

'oh what if you could do 3d in flash'
now we have papervision....its not a matter of how long it will take you, its how you get there, and fulfilling the task at hand
are you the kind of guy who takes the lift to the 1st floor?

reminds me of Css Homer

its rather depressing to think I am going to have to spend 60hours coding a very slightly animated thing... is this the future?

its all about 'the right tool for the right job'
im not knocking HTML5 etc but people do seem to think we're going to be using for everything in the future.. even to wipe our own arses with

- saw that before - hits the nail on the head perfectly!forbes
- Yeah, I came up on it a few days ago, myself. Couldn't agree more with the author.Continuity

This isn't HTML5, though, just straight CSS. Which is still an utter waste of time, in this case.
I didn't bother opening this up in Safari, but I wonder how much processor power this animation takes.

Some of you lot suffer a pitiful lack of imagination.
God forbid you should ever play, eh?

It's not that we lack imagination; it's that we're getting a little tired of the whole 'Look what I can do with a zillion-and-a-half lines of code! Eat that, Flash/PS/brain cells!'
The people like Microsft and Apple twig onto it, and try to push this kind of workflow and solution down our throats.
Then clients catch wind of it, and try to get us to do this shit, when there are perfectly good, practical real-world solutions out there.
- It's the client I fear mostgeorgesIII
- then isnt it your job to explain to them the logistics?Stugoo
- i do agree though, ive had to build a fuckin iPad site for a full flash fall backStugoo
- Yes, it's my job to counsel, absolutely. Most are good about it; there _are_, of course, always one of ro two pig-headed ones who apparently know more about this sort of thing than their agency does.Continuity
- ... who seem to apparently know more about this sort of thing than their agency does, though. They're the nightmares.Continuity

Sorry, I don't mean to be rude, but I can't envisage a single likely scenario where a client, an Exec at MS or Apple or indeed anyone anywhere would think that rendering an image in CSS has any purpose or merit beyond a tech demo.
Even if I could, I can't then think of any way I could lose an argument turning out the idea as impractical, misguided or pointless.
If even then I couldn't, I think I'd down web tools, turn off the computer, walking off to die alone in some forest somewhere.
- Actually - one scenario - rendering pure CSS rounded corners 4 years ago.detritus

- I do concede the l33tness of CSS rounded corners, I thought that was ace when I first read that.Continuity

Any flash developers whining in this thread are completely missing the point. This isn't an example of something you would do in the real world, it's just nerds having fun.
If you were truly going to do this in HTML 5 then you would use 4 images and it would probably be about 5/6 CSS classes.
- aanderton0
Yes its a cool way to show off what css3 can do. But at the same time its completely pointless and couldn't back any argument regarding flash and html 5.
- dMullins0
Waaah, waaah fucking waah. Someone does something cool in their own free time, and you tards water it down to another OMG I COULD DO THIS IN FLASH IN A FRACTION OF THE TIME argument, or "How useless."
Fucking haters.
