now that i think about it, we did something similar here about 6 years ago on newstoday in the table art thread. his approach was more tedious, but still..

"It's obvious.. the reason they did it is to play and to show that they're shit hot and can do stuff no one else can do (or at least has done so it looks that way to a potential client/employer)"
To play and learn was the only reason. I had no intention of this thing going as viral as it has, and aside from the small groups of haters missing the point entirely, it's been a pretty positive experience. I've got a job I'm very happy at, and wasn't out to impress anyone into hiring me :)
Thanks for the comments though, and I'm glad there's been some debate on the 'right' way to approach this kind of thing in real-world projects, which is obviously flash, or svg depending on your personal preference.

- ah soory mate wasn't hating, I just assumed that's why you'd have done it. That'd have been my reasoning..Projectile

Waaah, waaah fucking waah. Someone does something cool in their own free time, and you tards water it down to another OMG I COULD DO THIS IN FLASH IN A FRACTION OF THE TIME argument, or "How useless."
Fucking haters.

jesus christ you guys. it's just a fun nerd experiment.

@Subcide - you obviously haven't been round here much.
Even if you had recreated the original Star Wars trilogy in pure CSS it would have met with cynical commentary.
Don't be so sensitive - keep up the great work!

Take a look at some of these and tell me how they compare to Flash, lines of code wise.
Animating the whale in CSS3 (technically not HTML5, for WIW), it's more like nerd bragging rights.

It was just a fun little experiment guys. Don't try and make it into more than it is. :)

Kinda reminds me of my "pointless" drawing.

Dang folks, forgot I'd started this thread and come back to a can of writhing worms!!!
It's obvious.. the reason they did it is to play and to show that they're shit hot and can do stuff no one else can do (or at least has done so it looks that way to a potential client/employer)
end of.

1625 lines of code just to do that? im sure flash are quaking in their boots..
i dont see anybody committing themselves to doing something like that in an actual project where 1625 lines is going to eat up a lot of development time. that can be done in flash in literally 10 mins..
this is the thing i have about whole HTML5 vs Flash thing. people seem to be more impressed by the fact that you can actually DO this kind of thing in html, than what it actually DOES.
