Its a bit rich to say that ALL of them are rubbish. There are a couple of nice ones but its fair to say that most of them aren't great.

A couple of years ago on CPLuv, there was one that had a pretty 3D-ish scroll-wheel based navigation which was pretty cool. I think it was using PaperVision, if I remember correctly.
Arsed if I can remember which site it was, though.

well, either they are very simple or they tend to be a little over the top, nav-wise... I like:

Rafael Vinoly is good. I love the idea for the Battersea Power Station.

In general, the images are too small and the navigation is gimmicky.

sorry for being slightly off topic, but can anyone remember the site where there was a guy who bought a plot of land and was building a contemporary house for his disabled wife and family? The site was quite nice, pretty sure I saw it on siteinspire, but can't find it now...

Few years ago when I first started I got a gig to do a site for an architect - we put forward this minimal, clean, well balanced kind of layout, thinking if anyone, these guys will understand the concept of good design and white space. No... the lead architect got all angry saying "All you've done is put our logo on the top right and typed out our menu."

not all, no, not in my opinion

Hmmm..... I may be pitching a new site for an architect soon.... the problem is HUGELY variable photo quality, and he's unwilling to pay me to reshoot and he doesn't want to reshoot any of them himself.... probably PTSD over designs that started out well but client messed with and he never wants to see them again but he needs them on his website...
- some of the originals he shot, some were well shot by pros with 4x5's, I didn't shoot any of them.... yet..vaxorcist
- for the ones with bad quality photos -- make collages of them so that they appear smaller on screen?bigtrickagain
- that's a possibility... hmmm.. may change my template idea though...vaxorcist

No. For one:

They're bad because the tend not to say anything about the company or company philosophy etc.

This does that well, for example.
