@BK: The nuke at the end of Season 5 was the catalyst for Season 6. There was no "sideways" reality. After Juliet detonated the bomb, everyone died who was on the island in 1975. All of the BS in Season 6 was some made-up bullshit to fill the final season (which ABC generously handed to Darlton & Co.).

Basically, the only question I wanted to see answered (and granted this may have been asking too much) was...
What was the fuckin island and why did it have magical powers??
That would have been enough. Glancing over Meeklo's list for instance, I really didn't care about Paul's ankh necklace (and come to think of it, who was Paul anyway?). Even some hint of the origins of the island would have been something.
But no, instead we got ten minutes of Sawyer trying to extract a candy bar from a vending machine. "Character development"

the island was just a pocket of electromagnetism which offered up healing powers (curing Rose of her cancer, etc)
i too was looking for something more indepth, more sci-fi-ish. I guess what's hinted at was that while the electromagnetism aspect of the island was all natural, the "cork" was perhaps man or alien made.

I see a spinoff of Lost that has Hurley and Ben working together to take care of the island. It can be a comedy, and all variety of movie stars (Justin Bieber, Donald Trump) can come to the island for madcap adventures involving funny incompetent bad guys (the Others) trying to steal the light. In the end, despite Hurley’s screwups, Ben always saves the day and they learn a lesson.
It could work!

It was a great ending for a TV series, really emotional and well-crafted.
Sadly, it was a terrible ending for Lost - it 'answered' only the questions brought up in the final couple of series - it did nothing, at all, to justify any or all of the antics in the first two series.
A shame.
The truth is - network expectations, mass marketing and money destroyed something that could've been quite beautiful.
Oh, and we can all agree that the writers are Shyamalan-like one-trick shysters, right?
