How new Is this? http://code.google.com/webfonts
has anyone tried this yet? Good points? Bad points? Is it going to be the new cufon? Interesting to see it doesn't work on iPhone.

MobileSafari doesn't support otf fonts yet. It works with svg fine. I'm not sure why Apple isn't enabling otf support since its already in Webkit.

Good point - damn easy to setup
Bad point - very limited font library - http://code.google.com/webfonts- Yeah but if anyone has the resources to expand their library it would be Google, right?ismith
- I mean if it becomes "the" solution for web peeps, they're more likely than any other to just buy a foundry and put up a bunch of fonts for free...ismith
- bunch of fonts for free OR figure out a reasonable way to make money from it...ismith
- For example, free versions = alphabet and numerals only, $ for "commercial" full sets or w/e...ismith
- They can track hits to because it goes back to their server.ismith

Fucking whiners! This shit has been out how long, and you're already crying about lack of fonts?
Maybe I'm in a bad mood or something, but fuck!

@kpl - good point
@dMullins - I am not crying or ranting at all. Just pointing the fact.I am really looking forward to use it. I see that as a replacement for sIFR. So far this is the only solution that I've been using on my projects. For some reason I stay away from typeface or cufon.
What I like about the google solution is the setup and styling (done in CSS)

Don't forget Typekit.

Google are doing this just to push the tech.
When Google put their not inconsderable weight behind something - people pay attention, techies get their panties out of a twist, engineers accept new realities and Microsoft et al up their game.
The idea of Google buying a foundry or having some infinite hosted library of fonts is laughably naive - they will never have the fonts like people like us want - that's the point.
This is a great move - one which will finally push font-face out the door as a standard for mass acceptance.
Thank you, Google

If it doesn't work on iPhone/iPad, it might as well be Flash.

yet another half arsed google thing, if they really cared they would have commissioned some decent fonts for it.

Some very beautiful webfonts available through google fonts - implementation is easy-breezy. You can also download the webfonts and host them locally (without having to call a url). You'll have to nab the url from the script it provides.
Can only be a good thing!

PS: Looks like they work on mobile devices now :)
