Lacies are SHIT. Don't bother. Our agency is full of dead Lacies. They are just enclosures with cheap HDDs in them. Get a USB SATA docking thing, and buy some cheap 500-1TB drives. You wont regret itl

I have a WD MyBook and a Seagate somethingorother, no problems so far. MyBook comes with some retarded software built in that you'll probably want to ditch ASAP (especially if you're Time Machining it). Firewire is on the way out.

I have a lacie and a simple tech black cherry. The simple tech has been sent back for replacement warranty issues once. Now it stays at home most of the time to store movies. I take the lacie to work most days. The thing I like on the lacie is it is can be read by pc and mac.
I think portables are good for large ammounts of storage but they are at risk of corrupting.
Best bet is to back up your portable at home on another larger HD.
My wife keeps her portable in the original package when she transports it. She is in IT and says she has seen too many portable HDs get corrupted.

haven't used it much yet, but it's something to think about– just making your own external

Something I learned the hard way: running TM while you're downloading (torrenting, at least) will fuck up every hard drive involved.

I've had mine for a while now, can't fault it, and looks great on your desk.

from what I know, there is no point buying LaCie since they source their actual hard drives from other manufacturers
- besides they are pretty low quality from my own expereince. I can strongly reccomend Vaerbatim 500MB FW800popeluke

I would get an internal hitachi or seagate or western digital and put it in a separate enclosure, then you know what drive you're getting.
