I need a new external HD, 1TB, Firewire 800 in the 100-150€ range.
What do you guys recommend?
i was going to buy this WD but then read only awful reviews:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Western-…right now, my choices lean towards Lacie:

from what I know, there is no point buying LaCie since they source their actual hard drives from other manufacturers
- besides they are pretty low quality from my own expereince. I can strongly reccomend Vaerbatim 500MB FW800popeluke

I would get an internal hitachi or seagate or western digital and put it in a separate enclosure, then you know what drive you're getting.

I have the 1.5GB/FW800 MyBook Studio WD and recommend it.
They are a top HD manufacturer, Lacie is just a packager.I didn't look into removing the annoying software yet but don't think it would be a problem.
- it's nearly impossible to get rid of their software. I have this drive and haven't found a solution yetmonospaced

I have that same FireWire WD My Book but as 2TB. It's blazing fast compared my USB 2.0 WD or NAS WD's. Plus it looks like its part of the Mac.

Take the 1.5TB version, unlike the 2TB it is only a tad more expensive.

Do NOT buy MyBooks. They are retarded drives—I've never had so many issues with a hard drive before this MyBook piece of trash.
Just my opinion though.

Don't that WD software annoys you? always mounting the virtual drive? what's up with that shit? I'm not buying it if its that way.
- you can switch it off. it wastes space tho.ribit
- it is like a teenage boy dog - always mounting things it should notflashbender

Anyone who has that WD, please explain further the WD software issue.
- you have a virtual drive mounted where are some installation files you can use to customize driveraf
- Here's how to disable it: http://www.wdc.com/w…raf
- That does NOT fix the Studio drives, unfortunately.monospaced
- people actually install the pkg'd software? i have 4 WD mybooks, no software.inkpink

I'm having mixed emotions now.

@raf
(Note: This Firmware Updater is NOT for My Book Studio or My Passport Studio drives)- It's not like it's a real problem, also they say they're working on a firmware update http://community.wdc…raf

I understand the extra software lets you customize the drive's LCD display, ie. you can have it display an "ESKEMA's porn" label at all times, even when drive is detached.

I'm a LaCie, but always looked at those WD. And thought about it. They do have the software which I think is good but can be annoying if you know what you want to do with your drive.

The OLD software is shit. The new one that comes with THAT drive is much better (on a Mac at least).

A couple of my mates at work had a WD drive and the plug into the back of them was a bit dodgy on both, kept on falling out if it got a tiny nudge...think the male part was a bit small, or the female part was like a baggy prolapse...

The d2 quadra rocks - get it. Unless you like "fixing" things.

I use this one:

its great, very fast, and I need that since Im primarily working with large video files
but I also have one of these (i use for my PS3 movies)

what I dont like about it is this "WD SmartWare" thing on it I cant get rid of even when I format it, sucks.but most of my other drives are WD, no problems with any of them ever, except for 1 time when I dropped a 1TB hd, i managed to salvage all my data, but the drive itself is done.

I have a 1.5TB drive and a 500GB drive. Both from WD. Have had no problems whatsoever. Prior to these drives, I had 1 250 LaCie which has lasted me well over 7 years.
Honestly, if you take care of your hdd's and handle with care, you will be totally fine.
- yup, my 2-250 GB are Lacies, I think their around the same age, very reliable.moldero
