I understand the extra software lets you customize the drive's LCD display, ie. you can have it display an "ESKEMA's porn" label at all times, even when drive is detached.

I'm a LaCie, but always looked at those WD. And thought about it. They do have the software which I think is good but can be annoying if you know what you want to do with your drive.

The OLD software is shit. The new one that comes with THAT drive is much better (on a Mac at least).

I have a USB 250gb WD passport, had it
for years and it's great.I'm getting the WD 1tb USB 2 passport soon also. I can't be bothered with power adapters, USB powered saves hassle.
- it also strains your internal hd as it is sharing the poweridiots

A couple of my mates at work had a WD drive and the plug into the back of them was a bit dodgy on both, kept on falling out if it got a tiny nudge...think the male part was a bit small, or the female part was like a baggy prolapse...

LaCie's are good

The d2 quadra rocks - get it. Unless you like "fixing" things.

I've always used Lacie, but recently the power bricks have been shitting the bed, making lots of noise and one just plain dead. G-Tech G- Drives seem to be a better bet.

went ahead with the WD Studio. I'm liking it, super fast (via FW800) and super silent. The Smartware VCD thing, fuck it, it's only a mounted disc... can live with that.
- mine doesn't mount the virtual cd anymore...I didn't do anything to fix it. weird huh?monospaced

After so many external hard drive failures in the past I've turned to making my own. That means a simple case enclosure, with the option to get a proven internal hard drive that you can find on new egg or at mac sales. Here's the case I dig from macsales:
Firewire version since you asked, but I use USB 2.0 which is cheaper: http://eshop.macsales.com/item/O…
Then your own hard drive.
Once the drive is full, I store it or put it in an open bay on my mac pro. Then get a fresh drive for the case.
- there is a reason why USB is cheaper.akrok

FireWire vs. USB 2.0 Hard Drive Performance Comparison
Read and write tests to the same IDE hard drive connected using FireWire and then Hi-Speed USB 2.0 show:Read Test:
5000 files (300 MB total) FireWire was 33% faster than USB 2.0
160 files (650MB total) FireWire was 70% faster than USB 2.0
Write Test:5000 files (300 MB total) FireWire was 16% faster than USB 2.0
160 files (650MB total) FireWire was 48% faster than USB 2.0and this with "old" firewire 400.
- if you work with video. USB sucks ass. (not a pretty ass, just in case you thought so)akrok

USB 3.0 will be available soon.

WD MyBooks were a bit dodgy a couple of generations ago, I had a huge problem with mine due to it installing software all over the place and screwing up disk burning functions. Sorted it though with help from macsales.com tech support.
Since then I've had no issues and have bought a newer one. I'd recommend 'em.

yea buying firewire at this point would not be good business.
USB 3.0
ESATA
and some other new technology thats supposed to surpass usb 3.0 before it even gets off the ground

I've got two WD MyBook 500TB drives and I've had nothing but good luck. I've been thinking about selling them and upgrading to one 1TB drive and am leaning towards another MyBook.

get one with a fan. (if you want a long lasting ex.HD )
