Microsoft has announced on the IEBlog that Internet Explorer 9 will support playback of H.264 video only.
-
The future of the web is HTML5. Microsoft is deeply engaged in the HTML5 process with the W3C. HTML5 will be very important in advancing rich, interactive web applications and site design. The HTML5 specification describes video support without specifying a particular video format. We think H.264 is an excellent format. In its HTML5 support, IE9 will support playback of H.264 video only.H.264 is an industry standard, with broad and strong hardware support. Because of this standardization, you can easily take what you record on a typical consumer video camera, put it on the web, and have it play in a web browser on any operating system or device with H.264 support (e.g. a PC with Windows 7). Recently, we publicly showed IE9 playing H.264-encoded video from YouTube. You can read about the benefits of hardware acceleration here, or see an example of the benefits at the 26:35 mark here. For all these reasons, we’re focusing our HTML5 video support on H.264.
-Dean Hachamovitch (General Manager, Internet Explorer) goes on to mention that while Flash is an important part of today's web it does have some issues "particularly around reliability, security, and performance" and they work closely with engineers at Adobe in ongoing technical discussions.

^ I don't think that has anything to do with Flash, does it? They are just saying they are going to focus on H.264 for HTML5 video

they are saying that finally they will support HTML5 which is a big deal since HTML5 implementation and development suffered a lot by not being supported by IE.

Had to repost, this was amazing:

I love it when he bashes AT&T for "Making the iPhone unusable as a phone".

"Google believes that developers should have their choice of tools and technologies to create applications."

I wonder if there is a facebook page were people can upload "no signal" or "drop call" screengrabs from their devices every time it happens. could be a good way to make noise so AT&T gets their shit together or apple "opens up" to a different service provider..

If you read Wired News
http://www.wired.com/gadgetlab/2…..it lookes like Adobe were arrogant douche bags who ruined Macromedia and Flash's chances to move into the smart phone world.
Sounds pretty convincing to hear these ex-Adobe guys talk---
"A simple “Hello World” app created in Flash and compiled to work on the iPhone is substantially larger in file size, and it would take up 3.6 MB when it should be no larger than 400K when made with Xcode, according to James Eberhardt, a mobile developer who has tested iPhone Packager."
Im starting to think Apple is right and Adobe screwed up.

- gone are the conspiracies, in comes the truthwhatsup
- what a stupid example, a hello world cant take 3.6MB, that's conspiracy.spraycan

So where are all these HTML 5 authoring tools that allow for easy animation/audio/interactivity like flash? ...That's what I thought.
A few years down the road there will be one.. and it'll come with a 8MB payload of HTML5 Javascript libraries to run the content.

No doubt some kind of WYSIWYG tool will exist someday, but there is basically nothing right now, except for cracking open Dreamweaver or Textmate. But really, all this HTML5 animation stuff that could begin to rival Flash (Canvas) is at such an early stage at this point in terms of browser support that there's not really a market for it outside of the iPad and impressing your developer friends. So it's kind of a chicken or the egg scenario.
And I think Jobs and the other anti Flash people out there know that, which is why they are mainly talking in terms of video at this point, to sort of get the foot in the door for HTML5.

There is a good video of Shantanu Narayen stating his case on this link:

html5 cant compete with an applet based technology, Jobs just wants complete control on his devices. Jobs wants you to be a tool, an Apple tool.

TechCrunch has the Microsoft article at the top of their front page with the title "Flash, RIP."
I haven't done freelance or agency work in about a year, but it would be interesting to hear the reaction from clients on this stuff and whether it has filtered down to them at all.
