Why haven't you upgraded to CS4?
However, I would stick with CS3...

Companies are all about money, right?
You need to provide an argument about how it will be better for the company's bottom line to upgrade... then they will listen
"Me want shiny new toy!" does not make the company any more money.

- More features = less fundamentals...ideaist
- Patronizing bullshit.winnie_the_shit
- Or time-tested truth...ideaist
- I'm simply stating that fundamentals are what is important here...ideaist
- Yes, only this isn't about skills it's about tools. I appreciate what you're trying to say tho.winnie_the_shit
- What are tools without skills? It's a frustrating argument as so many try to stay "current"...ideaist
- ...In a world that changes every second and this change is documented by everyone in a digital realm...ideaist
- Can you tell me how I can use what you're saying to get my boss to buy me new tools?winnie_the_shit
- haha; just ranting really... I think it's an easy business decision; buy only when a want becomes a need...ideaist

CS5 is coming out already?
- Centigrade0
The fact of the matter is that CS5 will probably make you less efficient (ironically) as you have to resave all your files back back to CS4/3 anyway unless they upgrade the whole studio. All the additional features will probably not transfer correctly to the older software.
The printer that receives your job will normally be a version or two behind you.
It's a bummer but hey thats the reality of it.
- +1 for "The printer..." We recently had an issue of a designer using a "Multiply" effect...ideaist
- She had an image on top of a colour box and used the effect that didn't translate to press...ideaist
- Needless to say, a shit storm followed because the image turned out to be a solid bar of colour...ideaist
- More features = less fundamentals...ideaist

I would hold off until CS5 is more wide-spread to minimize file compatibility issues.
- <Centigrade
- and how will it become "more wide-spread" if nobody buys it?iCanHasQBN

Wow, these are some jaded opinions.
How come you guys upgraded to CS3?
Whats wrong with photoshop 4?
- bored2death0
I'm going to side with your boss.
Are you a designer or just a software operator?
- whats wrong with cs3 ffs? and how is cs5 going to make you more passionate?hans_glib

Tell him you could get a hell of a good look at a T-Bone steak by sticking my head up a bull's ass, but I'd rather take the butcher's word for it.

So, here we are.. CS5 will be available any moment...
I've asked that we get the CS5 update, and that having the latest versions of software is important to staying current and professional.
When suddenly.. my boss chimes in..
"You're going to have to prove it to me that this is going to make your more efficient or else.. why bother."
I don't really see the tools as being a matter of efficiency, but a matter of staying current, and being passionate about our work.
Anyone have anything I can jab back at him with?
I'm still working on CS3.
