There are so many people not even on CS4 yet. I wouldn't bother touching CS5 until CS6 comes out...

This isn't about my skill as a designer (I'm not a designer.. but that is a honest assumption), Or my skill at anything. There is nothing wrong with my copy of CS3. This is about wanting fancy new tools and what can I say to get them, because they look interesting and I am intrigued.
I'm not a noob, or a rookie.. I'm a manipulative, greedy, self centered (some would say whiney) son of a bitch who wants to get some social proof so he may get what he wants.
Ever want something new? or are all of you just so beat up that you are thankful for whatever rusty old shitbox computer you have in front of you is good enough?
Thanks for the piss in the face though.
I get where ideaist is coming from.. and that nobody ever NEEDS new stuff (granted). Centigrade had the best idea IMO.. Id take a trip to a design conference in NYC over 10 upgrades to Photoshop. But, my boss has even LESS incentive to do that, than to upgrade.
ROI? That's what WE sell.

Be careful what you wish for if your bonus comes out of the same department budget.
- I get bonused on the business I bring in, and how few sick days I use.winnie_the_shit
- You'd risk your health for the betterment of another man's business?ideaist
- no no, I get a bonus for every sick/personal day I have left at the end of the year.winnie_the_shit

Get your boss to spend the money on sending you to a design conference / workshops or whatever. Get inspired by hearing other people talk about their work and processes. Better for you and better value for your boss.
- That's the most intelligent fucking response so far.winnie_the_shit

CS5 is good if the boss is asking you to retouch the hell out of photos that were shot without specifying things, like you can add sky gradients very easily..... so if you have vertical shots and need to make them square or horizontal, you may be able to photoshop LOTS of sky and grass more easily in CS5 than CS4....
So... indecisive or vague instructions to photographer = good idea to get CS5, otherwise, may not matter that much....

I'm sorry Winnie but you sound like a rookie. Money is a big factor. Compatibility is a big factor. Jumping on the new shiny thing and getting smacked in the face with all the early bugs is another big factor. I have CS3 on one machine and CS4 on another and using neither makes me a better designer. I sincerely doubt that CS5 will either. Yeah it's good to be current but being too current can screw you over. You gotta think about the big picture. Your boss is right. Period.

- If ROI on software investments was a goal here.. then we WOULD upgrade.winnie_the_shit

People are simply saying that upgrading software will not automatically make you a better designer. Simple as that. I bet you could give a great designer a pen and a pencil and they'll do a better job designing a logo than most people will will the latest software.

WO WOW WOAH
OR.. is upgrading seen as some kind of anti-skill? Where you become more "elite" skill wise if you use some ancient technology. You become some kind of masochistic flagship of some bygone software era.
There was a recent issue of Computer Music, and they were interviewing Jon Hopkins.. and he was saying that he still makes all his music in an old version of Sound Forge, and he was saying how it gets the job done.. so why change it.
Is that just a case of the software becoming the process? Or is it just the utility borne from being a broke-ass musician. I feel that one, I used a copy of Jeskola Buzz beta for almost 10 years to write music with. I recently upgraded all my music writing software.. and it really shows in the end product.
So maybe I am just on an "upgrade kick" and overvaluing it?
- Society drives people to be "current" rather than "passe"...ideaist
- People on the forefront are seen as "Avant-garde" or ahead of what is current...ideaist
- You are simply wanting to be current... & their is nothing wrong with that!!! ; )ideaist
- a bad carpenter blames his toolsplash
- a good carpenter sleeps next to his tools...ideaist
- I'm not blaming my tools. I just want fancy new ones.winnie_the_shit

So, if upgrading were free.. There would be no problems?
So really.. what you guys are saying here.. is that Upgrading is good.. but spending money is bad.. The value is the problem.. not the actual functionality, creative enhancements, features, etc.
Is Adobe primed for a usurper?
Just like QuarkXPRESS, sat on it's hands for years and did nothing to upgrade themselves.. then POW.. Adobe Indesign.
- Value today (to the majority of people) is only seen as a $ amount...ideaist
- ...and... therefore...winnie_the_shit
- haha; therefor your boss will see no value in investing in something cutting edge...ideaist
- unless it is in fact (or if can convince him) a necessity... Want becomes need...ideaist

What parts of CS3 are we talking about? CS4 wasn't worth bothering with for most apps. And from a bosses point - 3 CS releases in 4 years, money, money, money. Still, if he is charging right and making his ROI then why not keep up to date.
- mrghost0
why do these tools have jobs?
- cashface0
Playing the devils advocate:
Upgrading is expensive and your boss needs to see a Return On Investment. If it doesn't make anymore money, then why bother. What you want to hear:
Great idea, let's upgrade and fuck istock images, we're using all getty and pizza party!!
- winnie_the_shit0
Fair enough.
How about if we downgraded to Photoshop 4, Windows 2000, and instead of Illustrator.. we used oil paints, and we coded all of our HTML with tables and gifs, and FONT tags.
- and listened to Cypress Hill! See, bonus already.winnie_the_shit
