Bizarre: VAIO laptops made (aren't they all?) and *designed* by other firms http://www.pcpro.co.uk/news/3572…

Race to the bottom, can't believe people actually like using this sort of shit

Race to the bottom indeed, I can't see how this can do anything but tarnish one of the most prestigious laptop brand names.
Wonder if Dell would do it?, can't imagine how they'd find anyone shittier than themselves to make laptops.

god - this is very weird. like the comment says below - few technology company actually manufactures the products themselves anyway. I suppose the design is being outsourced as well with Sony's final approval. Weird strategy as it is the norm anyway apart from a company like Apple who are so obsessed with the look.... oops, better stop there before I set something off.

Doesn't surprise me, Sony products have been going down hill now for the past 10 year. There shit.
- they'reSteveJobs
- not true, but i'll let you continue your rantgeorgesIII
- Sony is doing fine, they've just lost 1st place in every possible market.Jurre

Just seems like the worst possible idea for the Vaio brand which has been eaten alive by Apple who pretty much own the high end laptop market, what the hell is cheapening your product even more and making it even more diluted gonna do.
They lost walkman, Vaio is increasingly worthless, SonyEricsson hasn't had a success since the T610, PS3 is hanging by a thread what the fuck is wrong with Sony?
- vaio isn't really high end laptop brand - its across the board, from £400 - £2000ishckentish
- ps3 is doing greatscarabin
- PS3 is doing ok compared to Xbox, but both are doing shit compared to WiiPIZZA
- "next gen will start when ps3 hits the market" Sony said. Vrooaar! That was Xbox. Vrooaar! That was Wii.Jurre

sony shifted their focus and culture from electronics to movies and music. they then stopped making products that they believed consumers would use to "pirate" their intellectual property egg. all this time samsung was developing and adopting a design driven culture focusing on the burgeoning needs of consumers in the digital age.

This is normal for most tech businesses except the Sony's and Apple's of this world.... now that Sony is doing it, for low-end products....we're amazed?!?

You think Apply makes all of their products? Nope.
Check out Fireside technologies.....
- checked 'em out and I don't see any relationship ... what is Fireside Technologies and what did they design?monospaced

Apple has all of their computers and devices manufactured by the likes of acer, foxconn, etc.
Now they (apple) probably still do a lot of the design, but you have to think that the manufactuer is initmately involved in the design process, as they're going to fabricate the end product.
This business model (the nike model) is at work in every industry.

i guarantee this is targeted directly at Wal Mart.
their are several other companies who have "signature" editions of their products at walmart, which are just re branded cheap versions of the original design. clothing brands are notorious for this. some times this is the only way they can lower their prices enough for sprawl mart to carry their cheapened shit.

Did Sony make all the Toyotas that just got recalled?

i don't see how what building sony's crap is made matters or has any bearing whatsoever on your lives. in the end it's made to identical standards and is signed off by the same people. it's not going to make your stuff perform any better or worse.
- the very same way regional airlines are as safe as the majors they operate for? Think NOT!pr2
- it is very much the culture of the company. it makes a huge difference.johndiggity
- sony isn't an airlinescarabin

'identical standards' is a myth. When you outsource you lose a piece of the profit to someone else. If they're doing it cheaper than you did it, you can bet the formula has been altered. Some of that is labour cost differences (i.e. made in china), but you can build a factory in china too.
Todays executives think it's wise to eliminate 'manufactuing risk' from the equation. In the end, they compensate someone else for that risk plus some profit in the deal, and product quality suffers.- Slight simplification, efficiency and focus counts for a lot. However reducing costs further will impact quality.comicsans
- True. But improved efficiency suffers from diminishing returns. Way easier to change the ingredients and sell at the same price.monNom
- ...price. Most of the revenue gains come at the expense of brand equity, not due to operational efficiency. IMOmonNom
- operational efficiency is how the bean counters sell it, but a crappier product is the inevitable outcomecomicsans

or you pay others that are experts in a particular area, such as design or manufacturing.
No company can be a master of each piece of the equation (at least not to my knowledge).
But I would never buy a Sony before, anyway.
