I'm going to be in Tokyo this September for a week or so. Seeing as the city is so big, is there one part of the city I should be looking to stay in? Shinjuku?Shibuya? maybe somewhere else...thanks in advance

i was there this year, i stayed in akasaka. its a business district but its inbetween all the good stuff. easy to get around on the underground.

akasaka is right near rippongi, check out the Mori tower , awesome gallery on top best exhibition ive ever been to. also if you like being hastled by nigerians to see strippers, check out rippongi at night.
go to the tokyo fish market at 5 am, its mind blowing.
might not be on in septemeber but try go watch sumo, its awesome. beer, popcorn and sumo wrestling!
harajuku is awesome for shopping and eating, also check out the park on sundays. the crazy kids are there all dressed up and around the corner you can see the 50's / elvis rockabilly dudes dancing n singing.
shibuya is good for night out too. there is a bar right near the crossing called gas panic, its bit touristy but quite fun.
akihabara is awesome for shopping and go to a maid-o cafe, pretty fuckin funny. there are some crazy sex shops and stuff.
i cant remember what they called, but there are these awesome bars in this grid of tiny streets in shinjuku. tiny places but very cool.
also some naughty stuff going on in shinjuku at night...go have a drink in the last in translation hotel, its got quite a view
if you have time, jump on the train and go to kamakura for the day. coastal town, loads of temples and a giant buddha!
weird, we did so much its all turned into a blur, ill post more stuff as i remember it...

I stayed at my girl's sister's apartment in Ebisu. I would just say to stay somewhere close to the Yamanote train line. That's your best bet for getting around tokyo.

re: "bring money",
Public transportation almost works as a charm here. Trains & subways comes/leaves frequently and aren't normally delayed.
So instead of staying at big pricey stations like Shinjuku or Shibuya you'd save some good yen just staying a couple of stations away.Tip 2: use that money to buy things.

Stay anywhere near the Yamanote railway line - it gets you to all the main places and it runs in a loop so if you miss your stop the first time you can wake up and get off next time around...
- Or...get off next station and take the coming train back one stop, instead of wasting half an hour doing nothing?Peter

Oh and I am staying at the sunroute shinjuku in about 2.5 weeks. I got a serious deal on the hotel. That hotel is often less expensive than others in the area. It is 1 block from shinjuku station south exit.
Peter knows what he is talking about as far as not staying in shinjuku/shibuya though. It is an expensive area, but I am worth it. For the most part I would try to stay somewhere near the Yamanote line train though.
Speaking of that, I did this over the weekend; showing someone how flash and audio/video work together and made something kinda neat.
- Yeah, true, Yamanote is all right. But any station on the other half of the loop have almost nothing in terms of fun. Vouching for the "West" part of the loop.Peter
