In looking at building my site. I would rather start in illustrator or indesign.
Is there a way to build in another program? And export in layers... (to photoshop)?
Is this possible?
I just hate the way photoshop handles type.

indesign? really?

I find it much easier to lay stuff out in InDesign. Photoshop can be a nightmare. But then again I do come from a print background.

I am from a print background. I like photoshop for some things.
I just hate how photoshop handles type. It's ugly.
Will just use illustrator for type.

Uhg. Are you serious? Using InDesign or Illustrator to create webcomps is like trying to use a tackhammer to build a house... yeah... it can be done, but fuck is it the wrong tool for the job. You should also consider who the web comps will be handed off to... most developers would prefer you hand them a PSD comp they can slice up to a fucking mess of an indesign/illustrator file.
I always get pissed when I read threads like this... On one hand yeah, it would be great if Photoshop could render text as we might see it in a browser for a change (although it has gotten a lot better in CS4)... on the other hand... start using the right tools for the job people.
- i've been told by developers that they would prefer I use illustrator.... for the vector typeEtype
- wow, almost everything you said is purely your opinion and nothing moremonospaced
- right... because developers expect vector type to render perfectly across browsers... NEXTd_rek

Ok ok.
Sorry to ask you guys stupid questions. After 10 years of print, I am learning web design, thanks for being so helpful.

Photoshop is just waiting to be beaten for web design by some kids like those two brothers who made Pixelmator. Fireworks is no better, if that's what you were about to mention it.
Just like Coda and likes grabbed a big chunk of Dreamweaver's market, it's only a matter of time someone dethrones Adobe in this area.
What are the requirements?
Support for easy presentation of CSS features, even those as simple as 'border' for box elements or "background-color" for text.I suppose, there could emerge a program that would be a mixture of CSS3 wysiwyg and image editing features.

i would go by what the site will end up looking like... if its type heavy then i would use illustrator, and if its graphic heavy i would use photoshop

Use illustrator to make your comp, then export it to Flash.

I see nothing wrong with using illustrator - it exports to PS in layers (albeit awkardly) and also has slices, and export for web. The feature is not quite as precise as PS, but there are benefits to offset this. You can also preview in raster mode, which is pretty handy.
- Which setting would you export to? Flash? Is that best?
Thanks!Ladylike

How can you use a vector program for something where you need EXACT pixel representation. Take a look at the below graphic for one example. Illustrator is just not accurate for use on web. It's a VECTOR program, not a pixel program. This blurring effect happens even with simple shapes (like rectangles) as well.
If you're having trouble with type on Photoshop, try to change the Anti-Aliasing Method (Sharp, Crisp, Strong, etc.). You'd be surprised as to how many designers don't even know about this.
- All those AA settings suck. The PS killer will have those text display options: Windows/OSXraf
- AA Settings? PS Killer?iCanHasQBN
- Oh, Anti Aliasing. But whats PS Killer?iCanHasQBN

view pixel preview, snap to pixel, and align stroke to inside for rectangles. single stroke lines have to fall on a half pixel. and for the stubborn objects that just won't preview properly, make stroke widths 0.999px instead of 1px. ok, i admit, that's a bit of hackery. I just prefer the flexibility of Illustrator for comping stuff.

- if you dont think photoshop is flexible enough to build a website, you don't know photoshop.iCanHasQBN
- it's flexible enough, just Illy is faster in many cases. whatever I can't possibly care less what you use.acescence

i'm not sure why anyone would complain about using photoshop for the web? i seriously don't have a single complaint against photoshop, save for some extremely minor usability issues.
