This doesn't cover the iPhone stuff. He has another movie covering that.

rad... thanks!

the best thing so far is the improved actions panel with code completion... this should be out on flash 4.

I really wanted to be able to import object files from 3D programs. I can't believe they didn't do this by now. Didn't Director have this functionality about a decade ago?

i don't like flash anymore.
it's not an simple elegant tool.
it's a bloated kids toy. made from bright coloured plastic. with potentially gender bending toxins.it's not a professional, solid, elegant, useful tool for interactive designers.
unless you've been using it since flash mx and rolled with the changes you're going to struggle massively. if i'd never used flash before and i had to learn CS4 i'd be so confused about what i'm supposed to do with it. it's got 3D...well not really. It's got a bones tool... that you can't edit after it's been setup. it's got a motion editor... that is so awkward to use.. and you can simply add interactivity with actionscript - all you need is a degree in computer science and a background c+ programming.
it's useless for animation now unless it's simple frame per frame drawing for which the onion tool is it's only useful feature (and that's been there since day 1).
It's a hacked mess full of bug ridden additional features that have 5 minutes of fame before everyone says "what's the point" and then gets back to making proper websites with jquery etc.
It's only really use for banner adverts. so why not make a specific banner advert making app. instead of adding iphone export to it. why not stuff it full of features and short cuts for banner advert creation. like some sort of automatic ad resizing tool.
and the single most annoying thing i can't stand about flash is this:
you make a website in flash and it still bloody needs a pre-loader.
in 2010 we'll still be 'preloading' flash websites. pants to that.
- doesnt really need a preloader if content is loaded in - but yep this man talks a lot of sense. banner ad app would be cool.ckentish

Motion editor is a complete joke, it takes up about 2 entire screens of vertical estate yet you can't use a scroll wheel because it will change all the values as you scroll and to make matters worse they changed the system scrollbars to shitty anorexic ones. You can confidently say an animator never used it properly during its development, its just a case of developers ticking boxes on a list instead of checking if it actually works.
Adobe needs to learn their shitty platform is only used for multimedia crap, banners and video players. Not RIA bullshit that they wish it was used for.
- brutal and bitter man hackentish
- well I don't know a single designer who uses the new animation system for those reasons hahBIGGESTDOGINTHEWORLD

my office only just updated to cs4 and flash is doing my head in. cheers for the link, gonna have a look, hopefully they've improved the animation features... flash cs4's been massive downer here so far.

@ felizfeliz
I agree with much of what you said, only to a lesser degree.
However, I think if you were new to Flash you might have the advantage of not being used to AS2 and the way you were able to target nested movie clips easily and not have to think of the display list and display objects.
The complaints about graphics and animation tools are very serious. CS4 is the first version in about 10 years to make any improvements. Clearly, Macromedia put programmers in charge of Flash. At least Adobe gave us some new tools and didn't overhaul the language again.
The thing about preloaders is that you have a lot of control about that, but lets face it, you're going to need it for large files like video. That's not a Flash situation.
I'm not sure about banners being the only use for Flash. There are at least as many Flash sites out there as ever. Not to mention AIR. But you are right that Flash and especially Actionscript is positioned for software engineers planning to control satellites in space rather than media creatives who are animators and designers who want to get a site or an ad done before next year without searching 12 forums for answers on bloated code.

Bad news regarding the beta release: There won't be one.

to you whiners - thanks!... more work for me... pussies!
:D

Hmmm.... I'd be all for quirk-removal rather than new features...
From a project-management perspective, it's getting harder and harder to sell flash to higher-ups, due in part to the unpredictable development time, as random oddities slowed us up on a number of projects and the suits want to go silverlight....
- PonyBoy0
ffs... 'designer friendly' blah blah blah...
... they're moving w/the technology, folks - take a couple of days / weeks / months and educate yourselves as the new releases come out - practice a bit... wipe your runny noses and drippy bottoms - it's just software.
- version30
how much for the softwares with the iphone addition thingy?
- ukit0
I kind of agree...stop being retard and get on w/ it
- ukit0
That iphone export is the feature that will move a million copies of CS5...and then 999,999 designers will do themselves in when they realize that Apple rejected their app.

I didn't see it posted yet... but worth some thought: http://9elements.com/io/projects…
HTML 5 can do some nice stuff, and its just right for apps.
