    I agree with much of what you said, only to a lesser degree.

    However, I think if you were new to Flash you might have the advantage of not being used to AS2 and the way you were able to target nested movie clips easily and not have to think of the display list and display objects.

    The complaints about graphics and animation tools are very serious. CS4 is the first version in about 10 years to make any improvements. Clearly, Macromedia put programmers in charge of Flash. At least Adobe gave us some new tools and didn't overhaul the language again.

    The thing about preloaders is that you have a lot of control about that, but lets face it, you're going to need it for large files like video. That's not a Flash situation.

    I'm not sure about banners being the only use for Flash. There are at least as many Flash sites out there as ever. Not to mention AIR. But you are right that Flash and especially Actionscript is positioned for software engineers planning to control satellites in space rather than media creatives who are animators and designers who want to get a site or an ad done before next year without searching 12 forums for answers on bloated code.
