Graphic artist = someone who can throw something together in Adobe Photoshop™ without knowing the fundamentals / principles of design.

I think the word "Artist" has more meaning to me. Artist seems to be more well rounded and able to accomplish anything in any form of art or design. Graphic Designer to me is somebody that knows how to lay things out where an artist is able to create designed typography and work textures and combine elements to create emotion and a response from the viewer.
Even though I always contradict myself with this I always think about this: "An artist can be a designer, a designer is not necessarily able to be an artist."

graphic designers do logos and websites and typography and layouts graphic artists make creative art with graphic technologies. I'd personally have a hard time calling myself a designer of any sort I just make pretty pictures. the grid can go fuck itself.

its not a meaningless difference, design has a lot to do with communication and functionality. Sometimes it includes graphic art.

I think a graphic artist is more illustrator, fashion, apparel, ect - sketch mock ups and graphic designer in more advertising, typography, photography manipulation.

Graphic Designers specialize on form and sometimes even consider associative function.
Graphic Artists are form/function agnostic. The communicative aspects of their work are paramount, so which ever suits that best.
