i perfer being a artist - designer career sucks. Although I am a designer 99% of the time. Grass is always greener as they say.

Graphic Artist—What they called this job up until about 1990.
Graphic Designer—What they've called this job since.

Methinks:
Graphic Designer is somebody that has trained.
Graphic Artist is what some wet arse 16 year old on Deviant Art calls themselves after they've wanked about in photoshop for a few hours to create some god awful abortion of an image.

Graphic Artist - the people that close cut images of products to put into print and web layouts.
Graphic Designer - the person who integrates said assets into the layout.
Art Director - the person that came up with the original design for the layout, but is now working on something else "more important"

i personally dont apply to wanted ads that say the need a 'Graphic Artist'. I think it can be indicative of the type of work they do and they will expect from your work.
- hellojeehae0
yeah and chances are.. if you call yourself graphic artist. you are not a designer.

graphic artist = someone who does art on the computer

'graphic artist' sounds like 1950s.
'graphic designer' sounds like you only use photoshop/illustrator.
i think just 'designer' covers what most people do today (graphics, front-end code, photography, typography/lettering, etc.)

"Designer" especially "Graphic Designer" has been losing it's meaning to me now that everybody with a computer and Publisher considers themselves to be one.
