A quick update, as there's a new feature relevant to designiks -
smarter font management. I don't need to keep all fonts in one place and I can install/uninstall them dynamically, using 'shortcuts' - so no absolute need for a font manager.Pretty neat.
- 'dynamically' meaning when illy, etc is open (perhaps this is an old feature - I'd been using a font mngr for a while).detritus

Windows 7 student upgrade hell

Probably timelined, but If you still have a student e-mail account or know someone who does, you can buy Win7 business or home premium for $29.99. Download and burn ISO.

*guilt*
OK, I think my problems were entirely of my own doing - I suspect it was a driver issue, having installed a sound card driver straight from the CD... shoulda got a fresh one from the internet.
So, yeah - she's all working now... *fingers crossed*
d'oh!
Still, though - it was a genuine fuck up, but a crappy sound driver shouldn't lock me out of my own User group - shouldn't disable my abilty to access Properties, or the UAC, or whatever other service or program that might've indicated what was up. That's not smart design.
- and it should've told you the driver was not right.zarkonite
- I told you to unhide the real admin account, it solves 90% of problems. You're not the real top dog user of your machine unless you do this.Redmond
- Unless you set that account active and then use that to manage your computer.Redmond
- I tried doing that, redmond - it didn't work - nothing i tried, except a reinstall, did. All good now though - thanks!detritus

My grandfather bought a new pc yesterday and I was recruited to hook it up. First impression: Looks just like Vista.
The control panel has been more xp'd, so that was a plus. It actually installed his old printer. I got one or two Vista warnings, but it was installing software and not some bullshit.
I run a pc to play a racing game, but I won't be upgrading for a long time. Hopefully, this will mean more software will be 64 bit though. I switched to Mac a long time ago and won't be looking back. I wish 3ds max was on a mac though, blender just doesn't cut it.
- What do you mean? I find it's faster than max the more I use it. Lighting is faster too once you figure out how it works.Redmond

No, this is a completely fresh install on a new machine with a new SSD.
I'm going for a full reinstall.

here's a starting point for SSD info. What was your upgrade path? is this a clean install of a XP -> Win7 update? cuz that's not supported =)

detritus: what does your event manager say about your problems? everything's logged so any problems will turn up in there.
Step1: collect information to find the problem.
Step2: solve the problem.there's no step 3, ahahah (get it?)

Can you point me in the direction of these Win7/SSD problems you speak of, designbot? I can't find anything?

My friends have no problems with them, but I think once I get mine, it'll only be used as scratch/swap/recording to discs.

Let's just pretend, for a second, that I hadn't been using computers for over 25 years. Let's pretend I'm just some normal schmo whose bought their first computer. I'd be completely fucked right now.

- Did you use Vista or are you coming from XP?designbot
- Who? Me? :{Redmond
- naw, detritusdesignbot
- Aye, I'm coming straight from XP, though I've used Vista quite a lot.detritus
- Unfortunately...detritus
- Oh, I was just curious...because yeah win 7 is really similar to Vista just way better. If you coming straight from XP it would be a big learning curve.designbot
- a big learning curve. Took me awhile to get used to the difference.designbot

You SSD Drive is probably the problem, seriously.

Don't forget to unlock the hidden admin account using command prompt:
net user administrator /active:yes
Net user administrator password (optional)
Log off and the true admin account will be unlocked.
