OK, I think my problems were entirely of my own doing - I suspect it was a driver issue, having installed a sound card driver straight from the CD... shoulda got a fresh one from the internet.
So, yeah - she's all working now... *fingers crossed*
d'oh!
Still, though - it was a genuine fuck up, but a crappy sound driver shouldn't lock me out of my own User group - shouldn't disable my abilty to access Properties, or the UAC, or whatever other service or program that might've indicated what was up. That's not smart design.

- I told you to unhide the real admin account, it solves 90% of problems. You're not the real top dog user of your machine unless you do this.Redmond

- I tried doing that, redmond - it didn't work - nothing i tried, except a reinstall, did. All good now though - thanks!detritus
