this looks like a serious one, reading the comments I don't think some understand the difference between getting inspired by some artwork and just plain stealing it.
I fuckn hate people taking advantage of other's work

Appropriation is not theft. The "art" belongs to WSJ anyway.

yeh there's no doubt that the images are basically identical.. but there's more to it. I get the feeling that the artwork is based on the paper.. so he used images from the paper. Whether he got permission to use the paper's images is the real cruncher, but we don't know that.

is it exactly the same illustration?
or has the "rip" used the same original photo?Seems to me that the only difference is that Faireyd has obviously got some decent PR behind himself and his work.
I'm sure this lass would be giving pics to presidents and stars if she had as-good PR behind her.If I (an unfamous musician) sampled a phat beat from someone else, then some famous musician released the same sampled beat on a track and it was an instant hit, yeah id be pissed - but they are the ones with the PR machine behind them to MAKE things work.

sounds like shes bummed because the artist is getting all the attention for her work. She should make Illustrations of him in encaustic wax.

Another appropriator.inhaler97 - I think that's exactly what it is...she makes the image, Jose decides to charge £35,000 for it.

It's so unbelievable that it leaves one wondering if SF really exists and is not a name you give yourself when you rip your own work.
- 4040
so is this the official shepard fairey thread of the week?
- janne760
so maybe it is the other way around.. the ripper made it first, got published and the ripped took the paper article and made art out of it?

This artist is spanish and he was a member of one the biggest spanish pop bands from the 80s (Mecano). He relocated to London and I believe his art is currently based on printed media, as in being inspired or directly blowing up shit from newspapers.
I'm not sure if we can call this a ripoff.
- Geith0
I call bullshit on this. Theft is theft. No other way around it.
