he walked into the garage with a sword.
the guy wasn't in his house he was in the garage, and unless the guy was attempting to break into the house it was likely he would never bothered with the kid. the cunt walked into trouble, and with a fucking sword. sorry, i just don't see that as self-defense.
- BINGO!locustsloth
- sorry, i thought you said E-7 somewhere in therelocustsloth

- The garage is part of the house. Breaking into it is the same as breaking into the house.********
- That's how I see it. No attempt to call the cops etc.Mimio

And what if the thief ended up killing this guy? Nobody knows what happened and if it wasn't self defense then that's something this college student is going to have to live with forever. Hell, even if it was self defense it will still be a haunting memory he will have for the rest of his life. When you really think your life might be in danger I don't think you would sit their and contemplate "well can I just scare this guy away" you react right or wrong with a survival instinct. I think that's what this "kid" did. I would bet people who own guns and samurai swords are mostly thinking to themselves "I hope I never have to use this" But JUST IN CASE, you have the means to protect yourself/family if you NEED to. Again, anyone who does such things should consider the consequences or what could happen to them.

i agree COMPLETELY with the last line, designbot. Some of the other stuff.. not so much. While i agree that gun owners for the most part buy their weapons as a detrrant, as a "just in case" insurance policy of sorts, this guy had a sword. Who buys a sword AND ONLY A SWORD to defend themselves in this day and age? Now, maybe this guy was a martial arts expert and was trained in using it, but otherwise, it smacks of someone who's just been wronged wanting to go and meed out some revenge.
But since we're what if-ing. what if you had a brother who continually made the wrong choices. Shitty jobs that he did shitty at, fucked up relationships, gambling problem, whatever. And you knew he was trouble and you did what you could, but you can't babysit an adult. And you hope he turns his life around someday and you do what you can to make that happen.
And then you get a phone call that some 20 yr old KILLED him while he was breaking into a garage unarmed (for surely, the report would have said if he had a weapon). Are you less sad and furious because your brother was being a thief?- this is of course full of abstractions and suppositions and all, but that's the game we play here, ain't it?locustsloth
- His actions and what happened to him would be outside of my control no?TheBlueOne
- So you just say "Tough titty says the kitty" and move on?locustsloth

it's a sword most likely for display purposes homies.. it's not like he's a ninja in training. would it be a different story if he grabbed a butcher knife instead and story ended the same way

guns don't kill people.
katanas do.

I'd rather have the the death of an assailant on my conscience then being a coward in my own home.
btw I don't own a gun or a sword. I would use a spoon.

my girlfriend is a grad student at hopkins and had her house robbed a month ago. they took her macbook with all her dissertation research and her tv. broke in through a second floor window. she has an alarm and a dog. dog was locked in her bedroom with the ac on and she happened to be at her job on monday. the guy(s) left a giant knife on her sofa, probably for use on the dog, had she gotten out, or on my girlfriend, had she been home, the cops said. she now sleeps with that knife under her mattress.
this is an extremely dangerous city. if it was legal, i would walk around with a concealed weapon.

A have a long pointy thing in my house for such emergencies. I think they're more intimidating to an intruder and also far safe than a gun. It won't kill anyone on another side of a wall by mistake, and I'll be pretty sure of who it is I am swinging it against (well thrusting is the smarter move) given the distances involved than if it was a handgun.
Furthermore, I have zero trust in any human being that comes into my house in the middle of the night uninvited, to burglar or otherwise. The minute someone crosses that threshold unannounced, I have to assume this person is there for the worst possible reasons and my life and that of my families is in jeopardy. Even if the guy came in to steal a tv, who knows what he would do if startled. What if the guy has two marks against him and a third will send him away for good? Maybe he'll think he should kill me or harm me so he could get away without detection. Maybe he is there for a home invasion, how the fuck should I know. In this case the intruder made the decision to break the law. I have no idea what his intentions are and it isn't my job to guess what's "going on in his mind". If he doesn't try to flee immediately upon discovery I would consider it a life or death situation without hesitation.
- never call your penis a long pointy thing. it's creepy.k0na_an0k
- hahaha!TheBlueOne
- Well said TBO, completely agree. No sane person ever wants to kill another human being, but the flip side could be far worse..ie he kills your whole family...rapes your wife or some other atrocious act.designbot

Let's be realistic, the best is to get out and call the cops if you can.
Wielding a knife against 3 guys that live in the street and fight all the time isn't going to do you any good unless you know how to fight too. I would think that most experienced thugs would know how to disarm an amateur.

It's really sad this guy had to lose his life over some crap he tried to steal. I feel for his family. I still refuse to sit there and wait 30 min to an hour waiting for the police while my personal property which I work hard for is being stolen and my life may very well be in danger. I don't think I'm tough, I don't look for trouble but I refuse to be a victim. We live in a crazy society with people that would take your life in heart beat.
- 7point340
all i want to know is if the kid said "by the power of greyskull..." before lopping the thief in half.
- k0na_an0k0
i disagree. i think something instinctively kicked in with this kid once he came face to face with the intruder, and years later, all those countless hours of watching star wars, kung fu, bruce lee movies and various g.i. joe cartoons kicked in and he became one with his katana.

Fear does strange things to people. You never know how you will react under fear and stress that you are unfamiliar with.
I mean, I feel bad that the guy lost his life. He was a career criminal, but didn't seem of the violent sort. Still he knew the risks, he took his chances. He chose to be in that house. He rolled snake eyes.
The kid in the house didn't know what the risk was, he didn't choose to wake up in the dark finding someone strange on the premises. He didn't choose that. He was forced, but the actions of the burglar, to face that situation. The fact that that fear led him to taking the guys life? Sad, but it was the burglars choice all the way.
