Not sure, but it seems there is a limitation with Backblaze compared to JungleDisk and Mozy. From https://www.backblaze.com/remoteā¦
"Just in case, Backblaze will even keep multiple versions of that file for up to 30 days."I'm checking with their support to be sure, but so far this seems to mean that if you accidentally delete a file and don't notice for say 5 weeks, you wont be able to recover it. I wouldn't call that a backup service, more a 'file mirroring and limited backup service'.
With JungleDisk at least you can choose how many versions and how long to keep them (including forever), if you are prepared to pay for usage.

easy to store, share and easily recover files as you can tag them with details that make sense to you - far better than folders, especially for archiving. and cheap!

Basic question, how long do you want your data to be accessible for? How do you know any of these people will be around next year?, in five years time?, in twenty? What will you do if they evaporate?
Find a good local solution, make multiple copies and keep in multiple places. OK for one of those to be on the net but not for the only one to be on the net. Oh and by the way, tape is still the backup medium of choice for those who are serious.

My HD failed in my iMac last week. Seriously, thank god I had remote backup (Backblaze in this case). I don't give a fuck what service you choose, just make sure you do ... and do it now.

I have thought about Mozy but I'd have to take my laptop into work to do backups, 30kbps at home would be excruciating!

Just started using Dropbox literally yesterday. I'm really happy with it. Put off using it for a while to sync code base files, etc, because I didn't have the time. If only I had known how quick & simple it was, woulda done this a while ago.

buy a drive and a safty deposit box

Buy 2 drives. same size. Buy fireproof lockbox for home.
Backup to both. Take one to work.
When you're ready to backup. Backup to drive at home. Take "home" drive to work, and bring "work" drive home.
Repeat.
(keep whichever drive is at home in the lockbox)

Why not just get a cheap hosted server somewhere like site5.com? Site5.com is $5 a month for UNLIMITED disk space. FTP ur shit up there on a regular basis AND have an external backup drive that does it automatically for you (like WD or Apple). Use an FTP client like FireFTP, free for Firefox, to upload to the server. If you have REALLY important stuff, burn it to disc and put it in a fireproof safe.
Dropbox is good b/c you can drop some shit in a folder and you can access it somewhere else just as easily. It's like having one central location for your files. It's two steps easier than just using FTP but it also costs a hell of a lot more. You might not necessarily need this functionality.
FYI, I just backed up a TB a month ago and it took forever and a day (probably over a week) and I have a pretty fast cable connection.

Any new online backup suggestions out there? Online (Google drive, has anyone used it?)

Google already knows enough about me. I don't need them skimming through all my files too.
