Design with an ugly logo

So you get a nice project from a client. Contract is signed and everything is wonderful until you get his/her copy and images and you see their logo is completely shitty.
It makes all of your ideas, no matter how well structured they are, seem horrible to say the least.
I think this is one of the worst situations I've faced creatively speaking. Because unlike typography or colors, changing identity is not something you can easily persuade a client to do.
Has anyone faced this problem? What have you done?

'nobody can make it look good' is an argument i've used in the past... somehow seemed to have worked...

Make a 1 color version if it's not already, if you can invert and do white on black somehow that can sometime make the shittiest of the shitty look not quite as bad, can we see what you are dealing with?

it's true, nothing you can do except make the rest of the layout the best you can and if it does end up in your folio, no worries, everyone has been there and people understand...

Is this your first design job?
- hahahahahaha.flashbender
- Ha, no. It's just that everytime I come across this situation I'm trouble by it.MrDaro
- I know you want to do your best for the client and put this in your portfolio but sometimes you just have to think about the $$$$ and move on to the next project.graphiknature

just downplay it. Can you reverse it out, and just play it all white on a colored background?
- or burn it and send it to hell?shitehawke
- well that all depends on the budget, i guess.baseline_shift

Is it a web redesign?
Cause their site is out of control.

If you can't talk the client into changing or improving their current logo, try designing the layouts with out it. Use a different logo or something else as a place holder. Once you got something pretty concrete, put the logo back in. It might not be as bad as you think, kind of an out of sight out of mind thing.
That or play around with the logo and things that can accent it or maybe bring out any of the few redeeming qualities it might have. That or find things that help mask its flaws. Getting comfortable with the logo is probably the better route as you will hopefully come up with something that feels more cohesive.
Alas, some logos are just chi killers and option number a is the only route you can take.

Hmmmm..... I had a gig like this once, years ago, early in my career... the client's UGLY logo was engraved on the front door of their offices, printed all over the place,etc... so NOT POSSIBLE to change it...
I did some nice, photo-based design ideas with the logo at the bottom of the page, or sometimes discreetly in a corner, all went well, all sorts of approvals till the last minute when the CEO wrote an email that said.. "Wait a minute, we need to have a nice big logo in the upper left of every page" ... and it was done, but I could only manage to try to harmonize it a bit with the page by tweeking colors.... turns out the CEO's nephew designed that logo

Welcome to being a designer. I've been designing websites for around 8 years now and I'd say 95% of the logos are garbage. Is there anyway to talk them into a rebranding?
- version30
i doubt a rebrand is in the near future
