I've had exactly this problem recently - rebranded, put the new logo into the page, the structure and aesthetics of which were matched, the page looked like it belonged to the logo, all was cool - then they decided they wanted the old logo back. Fucked up the page something rotten.
Then they wanted it back to the original colors. Then the bottom half of the page a certain color. Then the top half the same. Can we make these buttons bigger, and have a different font (do you mean typface - wh' !?) here.
Fuck them.
Now it looks like shit cause its been 'designed' by other people, who are not designers, and don't know what they need. I do. Thats why you pay me.
It's not fucking difficult, isn't that why you got me to do it in the firstplace ?
Fucktards.

"we need to make it POP and emphasize this more and add this other thing and... uh.. you really need to clean it up because it looks too busy and... "
.... repeat ad nauseum.... the in-house work is for the out-house

I actually had something similar happen. A client had an artist make an illustration for his logo. While it was a good illustration, it made for a horrible logo. So I explained why it would affect his business and tried to stay away from the taste argument. The minute you do that, you start to insult someone.
The best thing you could is give him a full honest explanation then in the end it's up to them.

Put it behind something.
