ok... I will hire movers.
Thanks for making me change my mind and spare money... :]

when we moved to nyc, we hauled our stuff with us. I didnt think it was going to0 bad since it took 16 hours. Eh...I was wrong. I am not 18 anymore and completely different with a huge truck. So hire movers definitely and make sure you are awake when you get into the city. ha. Also one more thing....I am asian and have not had difficulty in small towns. Just use ur judgement. You would be surprised. I have hear that actually the some parts of the south are way more tolerant of interracial couples than most.

We did the same thing 3yrs ago. Quit our jobs in LA, got married and traveled for a couple months, went back to LA and packed up our crap, hired a moving truck, and since it takes something like 15days for a moving truck to make it across country, we got there a week before it did for apartment hunting. We took the southern route, visited friends in Arizona, then headed up to visit people in Chicago and Michigan, then over to NY. A moving truck company is totally safe as long as you research it ahead of time. My wife asian and we stopped in plenty of small towns, truckstops, etc... You have nothing to worry about.
- also just found freelance work once I got to NYC. Economy was a bit better 3yrs ago though.Douglas

I helped my parents move their stuff from Alabama to Socal. I rode with my dad in a big truck, with their pet McCaw bird riding on a perch between us. It was fun!
- The bird "elvis" was a lady trucker magnet.Frosty_spl

wonder how hard it's to the a apt, there with out a j.o.b. i seen plenty of ads which req. proof of income. but might be easier now, when there more apt. available.
- I'm doing some freelancing so I should probably ask for something that proves my incomes. thanks Akrok :]vsplus

Thanks a lot Brandelec, I really appreciate your advice. The fact that they can eventually hold on my stuff (for a month) is great. I don't have any appartement in Nyc yet so that would help for sure.

i also considered u hauling my stuff over.. but there really was no benefit from it at all.. it's not easy to drive, let alone drive it for a week.. it's expensive, you pay for gas+rental. it's not comfortable unless you're towing one of those trailers, but those are tiny.

i went with a canadian company (capitalmoving.ca) i believe they have a us counterpart by another name, can;t remember what it was.
to give you an idea, the rate I got was $450.00 for the first 500lbs and 55cents per pound after that. there was also a one time $50 scale fee. no hidden fees.
my total weight came to around 1300 lbs so it came to about 1K all in all. the service was door to door and you can tell them to hold on to your stuff for a month, no extra charge.
if you are dealing with these companies, make sure you get everything in writing or email.. hidden fees could sneak up and if you have an original quote for proof, they'll refund you.

Actually, I don't know what's the better solution.
Travel w/ my stuff or ship it over.

- Will rent a u-haul probably.vsplus
- won't that cost a fortune.akrokdesign

I hate road trips. Can't understand why anyone would do this by choice.
- Personally, I don't like to fly and like the control of drivinceiling_cat
- To discover things... maybe...vsplus

I'd like to make some project while we are doing this trip.
I planned to send a 3 or 4 postcards a day to my Dad from the places we are making a stop. Of course we gonna take pictures as well.
Any other idea ?

vsplus, i feel the same way about road trips. my wife is chinese and it's always something to worry about.. even if she doesn't care.
- Some people told me to avoid southern states because of that. But I dunno if it's really "dangerous"...vsplus
- ... that's why I'm looking for advices :]vsplus
- my vietnamese buddy went to alabama for business.. took him over an hour to get a cab.. finally one took him and told him...brandelec
- him "you know you're in the bible belt, don't you?"brandelec
- Thanks for making me discover the bible belt thing. I didn't know it was called like that.vsplus

Don't forget to remove your wallet from you back pocket or you'll have a numb buttcheek for hours.
