I'm currently living and working in LA and I plan to move out to NYC in september. And I would like to drive there with my wife and maybe a friend.
Did someone already do it ? Are there things, places, people we absolutely have to see while driving ?
Some people already told to avoid really small town since my wife is Vietnamese and some others told me that moving with all my furniture was not really safe (neither clever)...
Your advice or experience would be much appreciated.
Voila.

if you drive your stuff, just make sure to back the u-haul up against the wall at night!
south is interesting, but scary. north is less scary, but boring in the middle.
- yeah, the bible belt in the south. you seen the topgear guys there. lol.akrokdesign
- thanks for the safety advice.vsplus

Don't forget to remove your wallet from you back pocket or you'll have a numb buttcheek for hours.

vsplus, i feel the same way about road trips. my wife is chinese and it's always something to worry about.. even if she doesn't care.
- Some people told me to avoid southern states because of that. But I dunno if it's really "dangerous"...vsplus
- ... that's why I'm looking for advices :]vsplus
- my vietnamese buddy went to alabama for business.. took him over an hour to get a cab.. finally one took him and told him...brandelec

I'd like to make some project while we are doing this trip.
I planned to send a 3 or 4 postcards a day to my Dad from the places we are making a stop. Of course we gonna take pictures as well.
Any other idea ?

I hate road trips. Can't understand why anyone would do this by choice.
- Personally, I don't like to fly and like the control of drivinceiling_cat
- To discover things... maybe...vsplus

Actually, I don't know what's the better solution.
Travel w/ my stuff or ship it over.

i went with a canadian company (capitalmoving.ca) i believe they have a us counterpart by another name, can;t remember what it was.
to give you an idea, the rate I got was $450.00 for the first 500lbs and 55cents per pound after that. there was also a one time $50 scale fee. no hidden fees.
my total weight came to around 1300 lbs so it came to about 1K all in all. the service was door to door and you can tell them to hold on to your stuff for a month, no extra charge.
if you are dealing with these companies, make sure you get everything in writing or email.. hidden fees could sneak up and if you have an original quote for proof, they'll refund you.
