I love it. Gorgeous city, tons and tons of culture and plenty of outdoors activities (surfing, hiking, bike-riding, camping, snowboard/skiing not too far away).
For a designer, I can't imagine a more saturated and competitive job market as far as U.S. cities go. It was over-saturated with good, mediocre and bad designers to begin with; now, it must be more cutthroat than ever.
This is all speculation, mind you.
- you hit head the nail on the headutopian
- the first crash in 2000-1 cleaned out many of the original dot.com hacks. the more recent recession probably did as well.kld
- It's too expensive unless you got skillz(to pay the billz)kld
- too expensive for hacks that is.kld

SF is expecting the "big one" anytime within the next decade.
- I'm actually fascinated by earthquakes and really want to experience one... weird I knowmegE
- this is probably one of the stupidest things I could have expected to hear.max_prophet
- I cant help it... i seriously find them intriguingmegE
- pretty fun unless you're on a bridge, underpass, tall building...kld
- The "big one" will likely not be something many people live to talk about.dMullins

me too, megE. i can't wait to experience the days of fires, the long lines for food and fresh water and seeing as the state of California is practically bankrupt it'll be interesting to see how they pay for tents, blankets, and medical supplies. one of the main reasons i moved up here!

People in SF think they live at the centre of the Universe.

It's a great place, though I'm not entirely convinced it's for me. I have many friends there and visit at least once a year.
If you're going to work in the city, you should live in the city and lose your car unless you have a reserved parking space. Commuting in kind of sucks. If you don't live in the city, you'll find yourself avoiding it on weekends because it's a hassle to get there. That's been my experience with many of my east bay friends. Maybe other parts are different.
- I would probably live in the burbs and keep my car, i like to get out and take weekend trips a lotmegE
- you can live in the city and keep your car. DO NOT LIVE IN THE BURBS HERE.refunktion

san francisco is great. it's my second favorite city next new york. i think our economy here is doing a little better from what i've heard.
- colin_s0
i just moved here two weeks ago. like it a lot so far.
- instrmntl0
it's a small town too, so don't worry in that department.
- uh huh... i grew up in a town of 800 and our high school had a drive your tractor to school day - totally SFmegE
- oh, what i meant is, its a big city in what it offers, but its pretty small in size. also...instrmntl
- there are a zillion people walking at once on the sidewalks like nyc.instrmntl
- Sidewalks are far less crowded than NYC.dMullins

I like it here mostly for the weather and surroundings. I don't really get the "people in sf think they live at the center of the universe" comments. you find that to some degree in any city, and i haven't noticed it to be any worse here. it's definitely easier to get by here than a place like NYC. people are typically less aggressive. a lot of work available if you can wear multiple hats.
- Never lived in SF but I believe this is true. You can avoid the snooty vibe if you choose to.nocomply

agree 100% with acescence above. if you want to avoid snooty people, avoid the places they congregate. it's like any other city.
in my experience, there's plenty of work out there even now, which is exactly the opposite of the rest of the country and even a lot of other parts of california.
i've lived in many cities in europe and the us and sf has my heart for sure.
- instrmntl0
yeah, ive never met center of the universe people. is that in the marina maybe?

Loves this city! I lives in SF proper currently, been here for 8 years. Great city to live in. Rent is expensive but if you find a good place at a good price grab it and it will be rent controlled (nice part of this city).
Weathers always good here, not fantastic but consistently good. As for the general snobbery I heard of earlier on this page, well just don't hang out with people like that, its easy.
Each neighborhood has its own character, so walk em before you decide on one to live in.

"liquefaction"
my god that sounds good

if you're gonna live in the city....live in the city.
There's nothing attractive about living east bay or peninsula. (though oakland or berkley could be OK....)Yeah its expensive, but thats all part of living here. Come...live in the city, take your knocks, learn your lessons, get bored and on to your next place.
- oakland good, berkeley not so muchkld
- nice things about oakland and berkeley... but nothing as good as living in sf.refunktion
- powertoni0
Also...a difference of 2 blocks can make all the difference in the world between having a great apartment and meh.
The way to get a good apartment is to get into a shitty month to month place and then take 2 months or so looking for the right place.
- version30
regardless of it's name, there are plenty of Franciscos to meet
- pepe0
powertonis right. living in berkeley or oakland you might as well work there too. they call em different cities for a reason. SFs rad, i grew up there and would move back but my work doesnt lend to it. but seriously a wonderful city to live. people are a bit self righteous and self centered but the city has a lot of pride which is rad.

I used to live there and i have fam in sonoma. I miss it constantly.
