"liquefaction"
my god that sounds good

Give it a shot. I lived/worked in and around the city for nearly 30 years, living mostly on the peninsula and east bay for long stints.
SF is done for me, and I grudgingly go back to visit family. I look back fondly at my time there, but every time I go back it's much worse than I remember. It seems to have the worst parts of big cities (arrogance, crowds, expensive, overall filth and decay) without much of the upside (major cultural institutions, better art scene, etc). It's not without its bright spots, but I feel it's not balanced. I'm sure many will disagree with me, but that's been my experience.
Hopefully you will have a good time there, but I'm glad I left.

SF is expecting the "big one" anytime within the next decade.
- I'm actually fascinated by earthquakes and really want to experience one... weird I knowmegE
- this is probably one of the stupidest things I could have expected to hear.max_prophet
- I cant help it... i seriously find them intriguingmegE
- pretty fun unless you're on a bridge, underpass, tall building...kld
- The "big one" will likely not be something many people live to talk about.dMullins

if you're gonna live in the city....live in the city.
There's nothing attractive about living east bay or peninsula. (though oakland or berkley could be OK....)Yeah its expensive, but thats all part of living here. Come...live in the city, take your knocks, learn your lessons, get bored and on to your next place.
- oakland good, berkeley not so muchkld
- nice things about oakland and berkeley... but nothing as good as living in sf.refunktion

Also...a difference of 2 blocks can make all the difference in the world between having a great apartment and meh.
The way to get a good apartment is to get into a shitty month to month place and then take 2 months or so looking for the right place.

I'll give you another perspective. I like weather, I'm a new englander – and I miss weather a lot in SF. People are truly a strange mix of laid back apathy, or super frantic (as the city is too expensive to live in for true laid back working types). If you like a bit of manner and tradition, its not here. Also, the whole hipster/designer/tech community is pretty self-absorbed. People talk about themselves a lot – which seems strange.
Just a few passing observations. There are many more, both positive and negative.
I find it ok living in a nice house in the east bay and working daily in the city.

regardless of it's name, there are plenty of Franciscos to meet

beautiful weather, no jobs, no opportunity, lot's of DJs, lot's of people under 30, plenty of homeless people and tiny art galleries.

In addition to previous comments on weather, I too have realized recently how very nice seasons are for the mind.
After about a year, you stop realizing there are no seasons in the city of SF, and once you leave, it takes a full cycle of seasons to fully realize what you were missing before.
And to add to what arthur said, I was surprised when I first landed in SF how incredibly filthy of a city it is. Of course, it didn't help that I took my first steps onto the streets of SF at the MUNI station on Mission, where a crackhead managed to blow crack smoke into my face right after I watched two bums fighting over a half-smoked cigarette someone had flicked out. Was not the best first impression for sure.

powertonis right. living in berkeley or oakland you might as well work there too. they call em different cities for a reason. SFs rad, i grew up there and would move back but my work doesnt lend to it. but seriously a wonderful city to live. people are a bit self righteous and self centered but the city has a lot of pride which is rad.

I would add though, contrary to robotron, there are lots of jobs and MANY opportunities – especially in the design/tech/innovation space.

It's great. I lived there for almost 9 years and I loved it. Rent is expensive but if you live outside of SF (or outer SF) its not as bad. You can take BART (subway/train system) around. In town you can take MUNI trains and buses.
- Its one of the only cities that doesn't seem overwhelming. I'm originally from a small town and found it to be a good mix of city and nature.Palindrome

s.f is nice, not very big either. if you get a job there, go for it.

me too, megE. i can't wait to experience the days of fires, the long lines for food and fresh water and seeing as the state of California is practically bankrupt it'll be interesting to see how they pay for tents, blankets, and medical supplies. one of the main reasons i moved up here!

I really like the city, I wanted to move out there but couldn't. I visited it two times and I was like "I wanna live heeeeeeere". It's not too big but seems big enough so you won't get bored too soon.
