It's a great place, though I'm not entirely convinced it's for me. I have many friends there and visit at least once a year.
If you're going to work in the city, you should live in the city and lose your car unless you have a reserved parking space. Commuting in kind of sucks. If you don't live in the city, you'll find yourself avoiding it on weekends because it's a hassle to get there. That's been my experience with many of my east bay friends. Maybe other parts are different.
