So is this really an American thing? There is no way someone over here would even consider spending 10.000 on an engament-ring..
At least, not if your not royalty or make a couple of millions a year.
You can get an entire wedding for 10.000 over here..

I'm a bit confused. There's a engagement ring and a wedding ring, and she wears the wedding ring forever after? Then why not allocate most of the budget towards the wedding ring and get a cheap engagement ring, no?

I bought one recently, learn about the 4C's first, find a reputable dealer and make sure you get a certificate of authenticity for the diamond.

this is the one i got from verragio.. only change i did was change it from a round cut to an Asscher cut diamond.

- only 1.25, but the important color was the best i could get at a D and the clarity was a VS2 and the cut was excellent/ideal.slinky
- carat's are important, but the other things are probably more important once you go above 1 carat in size. no girl wants a dull 3 carat diamond with all kinds of visible inclusionsslinky

I spent a good amount on the wedding and engagement rings... but we didn't have a wedding. I'm fine with dropping thousands on rings. Those can at least be viewed as investments. We didn't want to spend thousands on a wedding. Both of us thought that was a waste to have other people we barely know come out and eat food that sucks (I haven't been to a wedding with really impressive food). I understand how some people can like it, but not for me.
That to me was the bigger win :D
