Seeing as we don't have a united union of designers, what are the procedures for getting made redundant?

the usual procedure is:
• you are asked into the office of a person above you in the food chain.
• you're told one of many stories (economy blows, studio blows and i going under, you blow and you're busted).
• you're sent on your way.
• if you have holiday time oweing you should get that. should but won't definitely.
• the usual is 2 weeks severance but sometimes it's fuckall.and that's about that.

1. Get called in to office
2. Get told that the economic downturn has forced the company to consider ways of becoming more cost effective in order to survive.
3. Be advised that your position is no longer deemed crucial and that you must seek alternative employment.
4. Learn, possibly for the first time, that redundancy payments are entirely discretionary for less than two year's employment, and that thereafter you're only entitled to one week's pay per unblemished year of service provided to the company*.
5. Stand up, struggle with the turbulent emotional chasm that exists between saying 'thank you' and 'fuck you'.
6. Feel the impotence, smile weakly, walk out quietly.
7. Return home, entertain rage-based fantasies of anarchic destruction.
8. Call recruitment consultant and get in line for the next available position.* '1 weeks pay per year of unblemished service to the company' means that if you took one day more sick leave than is allowed, that year is discounted from your redundancy entitlement.. If you took any unpaid leave in addition tot he statutory holiday allowance: that year is discounted from you redundancy entitlement.

Wow thats tough, I got 6 weeks plus 2 weeks for every year I had been there and it was rounded up. Plus all my holidays and bonuses.
I was working for a mining company though. I think two weeks for every year is standard here in Aus.

9. If you're a female account handler from Islington, cry and take it personally and make sure you tell everyone how hard it will be to keep up the payments on the small fleet of SUVs and the townhouse.

10. In fact if you're any kind of female at all and of fertile age, make lots of prejudice accusations against thecompany via a cheap solicitor who argues that the redundancy is based only on the need to avoid potential maternity-leave issues and be left with a half-interested young mum who only wants to work 3 days a week and needs to arrive late/ leave early... and you'll get a huge out of court settlement.

Keep an eye out for Friday afternoon meetings. There's usually a 'consultation' period involved as well.
It's shit when it breaks up a good team.

Legally, there's all kinds of hoops that your employer needs to go through. They can't just 'make you redundant' without some kind of audit trail of how they've arrived at the shortlist. It needs to be a equation of sorts... not just discriminatory. So, if there's too many designers, they must say 'last-in - first out'. They can not pick and choose.
Anyway honest.. my mum works on the advice line for Acas (http://www.acas.org.uk) if you're having problems and want some free advice. I have the direct number.
- Obviously she's bored me with this stuff often.********
- You sure about 'Last in first out'?.I know numerous cases where 2 comparable individuals undertook a period of consultation...babaganush

This stuff will only get easier for employees in my opinion. The CBI has already proposed going halves with employers to keep jobs open for up to 6 months and only pay the employee the standard job seekers allowance (the government matching this). All as an aid to desuade redundencies. I think restrictions after this global downturn will seriously ease for employers to stop companies folding.

babaganush - I used that an example of criteria - not THE criteria.
My point being that there must be a criteria - the boss can not simply pick and choose at random.
