    Legally, there's all kinds of hoops that your employer needs to go through. They can't just 'make you redundant' without some kind of audit trail of how they've arrived at the shortlist. It needs to be a equation of sorts... not just discriminatory. So, if there's too many designers, they must say 'last-in - first out'. They can not pick and choose.

    Anyway honest.. my mum works on the advice line for Acas (http://www.acas.org.uk) if you're having problems and want some free advice. I have the direct number.
