    1. Get called in to office
    2. Get told that the economic downturn has forced the company to consider ways of becoming more cost effective in order to survive.
    3. Be advised that your position is no longer deemed crucial and that you must seek alternative employment.
    4. Learn, possibly for the first time, that redundancy payments are entirely discretionary for less than two year's employment, and that thereafter you're only entitled to one week's pay per unblemished year of service provided to the company*.
    5. Stand up, struggle with the turbulent emotional chasm that exists between saying 'thank you' and 'fuck you'.
    6. Feel the impotence, smile weakly, walk out quietly.
    7. Return home, entertain rage-based fantasies of anarchic destruction.
    8. Call recruitment consultant and get in line for the next available position.

    * '1 weeks pay per year of unblemished service to the company' means that if you took one day more sick leave than is allowed, that year is discounted from your redundancy entitlement.. If you took any unpaid leave in addition tot he statutory holiday allowance: that year is discounted from you redundancy entitlement.
