But I need friends.

This guy's work I find inspiring. He did the Eco Zoo site.
I like the idea of tackling both the design and the technology.

I'm doing an old school "fur trade" style deal, right now for a member of QBN. His work is infinitely more interesting and valuable than what I'm giving him but it's pushing me to learn new skills and I'm having more fun with it, than I've had on any project in the last few years.
I only hope that it lives up to his expectations.

Thats why I prefer doing my own projects using my own money. So much better and happier.

The problem I have is that when I get other people involved, they generally want to control the creative direction and usually their ideas suck.

Dropdown, do tell. How does a fur trade work?

most of the time it seems more important to get away from the screen after work. then the incentive of producing something new usually ain´t enough, considering you want full control and want the piece to rock, so you have a small team, or better do it yourself alltogether, so then you´re facing 100 hours to put in, just to build something for fun.

True GH, thats why its so much easier to pay someone to do it.

but i get where you´re coming from, the day job is most of the time so dull, too much compromise, unspectacular, braking you out, so that i´d be nice to produce something you can stand behind somehow. maybe even something that actually matters to someone else.

i generally don't work for creatives much anymore, because i can't take the risk of someone's private investment in a project.
rather, i try to sell ideas to faceless companies who don't know shit about design, but who badly need it.
think about infographic stuff, design where it is really adding significant value.

..and in the future, if i make enough money, i want to spend a little more on hobby things, such as photography in my case.

Free work still happens. May be personal artwork that is done on spare time - I still see a lot of that. Or it could be a designer doing some free work for a cause they believe in, that also turns out to be a good portfolio item. It's true that the person you're doing free work for can still act demanding, though, so don't get yourself into too much responsibility and make sure there are not pressing deadlines (tell them it will have to be on your own time) if you want to take it easy.
