Free work still happens. May be personal artwork that is done on spare time - I still see a lot of that. Or it could be a designer doing some free work for a cause they believe in, that also turns out to be a good portfolio item. It's true that the person you're doing free work for can still act demanding, though, so don't get yourself into too much responsibility and make sure there are not pressing deadlines (tell them it will have to be on your own time) if you want to take it easy.
